I understand udongle's perspective from the standpoint of somebody who thinks the system can still be peacefully reformed, but most of us have long abandoned that ideal.

@Hoss @udongle @burner
The system can largely still be reformed peacefully, there are a two factors standing in the way though. One is that people have been largely conditioned to think that their vote doesn't count, that civil disobedience is useless and that conversations do not move things forward, and that was done deliberately and by design. The other factor is that the entrenched bureaucracy tries its hardest to undermine what elected representatives can do.
Both of those factors have led to a state of affairs where people falsely feel powerless to change anything. And I say falsely because it's obvious that's not the case. A minority of left-wing activists captured the institutions of the western world simply by being loud and exercising their power as a collective. The majority of people, or at least a group of people that speaks for the majority can do the same things very easily, they just don't because each individual person thinks no one will stand behind them if they try.
