     Either it’s, you didn’t pay attention or they’re doing something different than when I was your age.

     I’ve met maybe one who was willing to teach the younger generation all these complex machining techniques and methods, but he expects you to be as autistically obsessed with it as he is.

If they need him that badly it wouldn’t be totally impossible for him to set up someone to take his place. Train him off the clock, prep him, give him whatever assets and tools he had throughout his career to at least tell them “hey I got this kid, give him a shot and contract him to fill in for me and see how he does”

You show up and some guy takes you from zero to “professional pilot”, teaching you everything he knows. Somehow it serves well enough. But every other industry acts like that’s impossible, there’s just no way you can teach without classes and schools

     it is very possible to do (even with 1 person) its just *a lot* of effort and time spent on things other than actually running your business. You leanr that quickly and most people often hire others for things like bookkeeping, taxes, and whatnot

     Anybody who tries to start their own stuff is subject to nonstop lawfare. There's a shitload of regulations for any industry of note (basically everything other than service industry type bullshit), which, of course, all the established players got either grandfathered in, or got a discount on the "inspection fees".
     
     Basically, starting a business without either selling your soul and the next three generation of your family to the banks, or being crushed by aggressive anti-competition measures is functionally impossible in the US. :dead_inside:

Like, if my dad was a COBOL coder, and he’s retired but STILL getting calls to come in and fix stuff, why wouldn’t it do me good to have him teach me everything he knows, walk me through his same curriculum, and then have him tell callers “yeah I’m not available but I’ll put you in touch with someone who can do it”?

Since all that "yucky, bigoted old stuff" was destroyed, people are desperate for anything that gives them a sense of kinship, which leads to people "participating" in hobbies they loathe simply to access the community tied to said hobbies. :dead_inside:

     I helped out w/ hiring at my last company, and only opted for “underqualified” guys. All the guys who met the standards were bad picks - they could either do better or they were such assholes they’d fallen down to our level

     When it comes to applying for jobs you have to spam the fuck out of them. Apply to anything and everything possible, take interviews at companies you don’t want to work at just to get some interview prep.

     Back in retail, I once knew an assistant manager (a millennial) of a jewelry store who was promoted to management over a boomer who was similarly working out of retirement. The boomer didn't take it well at all, even though the assistant was no slouch and had a reputation for results. Boomer complained directly to the regional manager (gen Xer I think) to his face when he visited, who proceeded to lecture him about how the assistant's merit exceeded his own. Boomer didn't like it, so he quit on the spot.
     
     Boomers, in general, don't work well with younger people. And certainly don't like being subordinate to them, even if they happen to be more competent than they are. If they're working out of retirement for a high-paying gig, it's because they're desperately trying to hold onto a lifestyle that they were previously used to, even if it's at the expense of someone younger than themselves and for a position of very high import to prevailing paradigm. If they say "no one can do my job", they're lying, plain and simple.
     
     With that said, I know a few boomers I could work well with, but they're the exception to the rule after having adapted their lifestyles to fit with the times.

     -Everyone on the floor is either a gigaloser or set to retire. Anyone who wasn't already got a promotion and moved to Engineering, and anyone who wasn't AND didn't already probably has beef with management.
     -Management is so fucking piss-poor that everyone who unfortunately gets hired notices how bad things really are before the end of their first full day.
     -Even with the promotions off the floor, there aren't enough Engineering Technicians and Engineers proper to go around. You've got a few dozen guys that ALL need Engineering support and someone has to lose out.
     -People are constantly brought back out of retirement because "oopsie poopsie turns out you were wearing too many hats and we were so laser focused on making money that we forgot to train people on the thing that only you knew how to do" and it keeps fucking happening and only the serious workaholics in need of an extended grippy sock vacation actually enjoy it.
     -I know of one guy that's semi-permanently out of retirement because he does design, CAD, and a few other hats all at the same time, and that's so invaluable that he cannot be allowed to retire, ever basically.
     -The entire factory is built on a house of cards and if anything happens the entire thing comes crashing down. Management isn't accountable and never takes responsibility, so you bet your ass is working split shifts and double overtime until the house is rebuilt only for something else to happen a few months later.
     -We're adjacent to some of the big defense contractors, and all of them are turning into programming shops and outsourcing their manufacturing to other companies. All I've heard about these places is that e.g. Lockheed will get a defense contract, subcontract out the manufacturing, then yell at programmers until they glue everything together with jizz and bubblegum.
     -People are constantly having health problems. America's manufacturing institutional knowledge is kept trapped in the brains of old diabetic retards that chug three Mountain Dews a day, and they're baby boomers, so their knowledge goes with them to the grave.
     -Made in America is just a meme, usually it only needs to have final bits of assembly and certification done in America and you can call it that. All the intermediary steps are done by Mexicans or Indians.
     -There is no room for promotions or raises. If you were going to get one, you would have already. You don't live in legal poverty, but you might as well be working poverty wages, and corporate is proud. Big proud.
     Honestly if they outsourced all the manufacturing overseas, it'd tank the quality of everything, but it'd be a mercy.

     Virtually nobody in my household cooks or has basic knowledge about cleaning chemistry ⚗️.
     I have enough knowledge to float a boat, not an ear to funnel it into.
     If you do some rough math on the average participants in technical studies or even electromechanical knowhow, it's maybe 1 to 10% that can accomplish meaningful maintenance or even keep stuff going. The average increases for blue collar button pushing and manual labor, but swift declines when it comes to teaching that shit.
     I totally agree fir the most part, the USA has straight up strangled any kind of competent rationale towards being a self sufficient powerhouse.
