Groomschild (groomschild@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 13:56:34 JST Groomschild @Samhydeigger dark matter is such a retarded concept.
we have this model of the universe but the only way it works is if most of the matter in the universe is incorporeal and unseeable.
nigga just change the fundamentals of your fucking model if you cant make it work. dont make up random bullshit-
Lichelord Godfrey (lichelordgodfrey@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 13:56:33 JST Lichelord Godfrey @wgiwf @Groomschild @Samhydeigger There’re alternatives that explain it already, but it’s not as sexy as “dark matter” or “dark energy” which sound spooky and like some kind of special form of matter/energy we could exploit for.. whatever.

Wolfgirl in Wheatfield (wgiwf@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 13:56:34 JST Wolfgirl in Wheatfield @Groomschild @Samhydeigger The phenomenon that is explained by dark matter is real, a mismatch in the expected strength of the gravitational interactions and the estimated mass of the objects interacting.
The assumption is made that there is an unknown and seemingly undetectable something causing it and not a misunderstanding of gravity or something else more problematic to scientific norms than the mystery thing. Make of that that you will. -

If the field actually mattered like, say, radio waves, flight, or combustion the debates would have been ironed out and profitable 35 years ago. Instead, it’s a lot of argument about something about as consequential as 40K lore, until we send another NASA-branded RC car into space

I’m just pointing out all this shit has failed to do anything of note, as seen from the glacial pace of theorization and confirmation. If there were any real world use case other than a prestige academic complex to sell more astronomy degrees, all of these things would have been ironed out decades ago.
There were similar debates about all these other sciences, disagreements in efficiencies, designs, etc. but they all gave way before real-world application. No theory there, it’s all fact, because they had to be sifted in order to be useful to society. Astronomy has no such pressures.
Might as well pay nerds tenure so they can write about how the warp interacts with Gellar Fields vs Scranton Reality Anchors in Warhammer

or the telescopes are off my a miniscule degree.
A 0.000000000000001 degree error can become very big when the observed object is billion of light years away -

Cool, they know about time dilation and the formation of galaxies, how does that convert itself into a measurable improvement for anyone BUT academics in Astronomy programs across the country?
At least putting them to work writing theory for warhammer novels helps sell books to nerds, that’s measurable economic output!

The system is cliquish and self perpetuating at this point publishing papers for the sake of publishing papers.
Astronomy is a science from a distance and from across time; hands on work with the object of study isn't really possible. Particle physics seems to be the real boondoggle now. Multi billion dollar accelerators built to detect particles that don't exist.
Maybe what made the scientists of old so great was that they often weren't just scientists, they had other jobs and responsibilities outside of academia. The man who formulated the Big Bang and proved the hack Einstein wrong was a Catholic priest, someone who has other more important responsibilities in his life than just the pursuit of science.
