   Need to coin a term for this phenomenon where creators continue to put out a shitty, low-quality show to a consistent fanbase full of people who started watching as a kid, and just never took a step back to see whether or not the content’s any good.

   Seems fairly common for people who got popular 10+ years ago to keep on preaching to a core fanbase of people, but when you come in from the outside, not having fallen in love w/ the content as a 14 yo kid, you just ask “what the hell are you guys doing? This show sucks ass”

     People have recommended that PKA show to me and I finally gave it a try, only to find it’s just 4 tremendously out of touch faggots living in 2009. No laughs, no charm, just rambling about stories they had back when they had interesting, active lives as popular youtubers, and really, just amazingly out of touch commentary on current events

     (like how the donbass separatists are part of ukraine and if they wanted to leave they should be shot as traitors, just like any american secessionist should be too, followed by one saying ukraine was gonna win without knowing where the donbass was or how far back the conflict stems)

     But it’s emblematic, seems like the majority of 10+ year creator types have all fallen into this “fuck it, it’s my job now” rut of passionless going-through-the-motions-for-a-paycheck dross

     @WashedOutGundamPilot The Nostalgia Critic/Doug Walker ruined his show with constant long, unfunny skits, but in his case it's somewhat understandable, because he was always passionate about creating his own content (which nobody liked), rather than just making fun of bad movies (which was what his audience actually enjoyed), and he obviously resents the fact that the content he's actually passionate about never resonated, so he tries to sneak it in through the back door.

     @ChristiJunior The other one that bugs me is redlettermedia. Gave them a try a while back and all the acclaim, respect, and admiration is pretty undeserved. It’s terribly low-effort content of unemployed guys just doing the minimum and turning the camera on.

     I think the only funny thing they put effort into was that “nerd crew” parody they did, and that was like, 5 years ago. I really can’t think of anyone that’s kept up the vim & excitement after 10 years online. It just burns you out, like the water in a reactor being contaminated into heavy water

     @Zealist @ChristiJunior It’s not just the production value, it’s that they just aren’t funny. The schtick now is “haha aren’t we so soul-dead and burned out lol”, but that’s reliant upon knowing their body of work. For a new viewer, it’s just fat old men giving it 07% of their effort to be engaging or joking.

     There just aren’t enough actual, funny, entertaining people. It sucks that we don’t have many, because we really need a few good performers that know how to keep up a high-energy, quick moving show while they keep the jokes riffing. We need the kind of guy who guest stars and brings in 6x the views, because everyone says “shit man, that guy’s FUNNY”. We have like, 6/10 riffers at best.

     @ChristiJunior It reminds me that my travel videos where I was playing a character of the typical american loudmouthed european tourist got more views than when I was my usual reserved, educated, but heavy drinking self. I hated being that character, I did it once as a one off thing but people loved it so much. It’s why I nuked my channel and so far all traces of it can’t be found. How bad was the character?

     • I asked to see where I could find Dracula’s castle in Bucharest, and then was angry that there weren’t any vampires.

     @brimshae Life experience is what makes a show. Problem is…..most ‘creators’ don’t have it anymore. They’re comfy. They’re boring.

     I was just surprised, because I instantly got the sense that these guys are very much in the “cloistered” phase of E-celebdom. They probably insulated themselves with a patreon, or a subreddit, and now they just live a frictionless, comfy existence free of major strife

     @ChristiJunior I had a video of myself in the hinterlands of Romania, speaking either in easy-to-understand English or reasonably polite Romanian. Almost no fucking views except from Romanians who were 1) surprised I pronounced things correctly, 2) surprised I wanted to see some of the “bad” parts of Romania (sorry but like 98% of the country is “bad parts”). @WashedOutGundamPilot

I don’t play along with what they want, so the friendship fades when I say “dude I’m not inviting your wife on our trip, that’s just awkward” or “why is she texting me to send you home? Are you 11?”

     I’m mostly done w/ friends, I invest that energy in family now. If you got them, make sure you all know that male friendships require attention and nurturing too, and they’ll pretty much always be subverted by women (who feel they are being robbed of your bro’s time & attention)

That alone is a reason why you always go with a buddy. Also anywhere that has mountains means that the weather can suddenly decide to go "lol, fuck you buddy"

     So many people can’t figure out the basics of even living, they’re too coddled in the 1st world.      @cyberanathema @ChristiJunior One of my truest regrets was not importing all my guns back to the states. I got some very funky, cool old things over time. I didn’t even know you could import handguns, thought they had to be long guns only w/o a bunch of trouble.

     I mostly got old revolvers from security guys, paid an INSANE amount to get a new-manufacture glock, I think like $900, and they were sub $500 stateside back then. I just wanted to be a little up-gunned when I had to start working alone more. Not a good feeling being a walking loot crate when people know you’ve got one 10-mile stretch of road.

     The best defense abroad is being liked. When everyone knows you and wants to be buddies, it really does the heavy lifting in letting you breathe easy

     @Bill_Boone I've done budget travel to a bunch of different places when I used to have a better paying job. In a lot of places in South America, but also parts of Asia -- they just automatically trust you more if you're White/pale. Maybe you could think of it as the “Simpsons Effect”, but this is more distinct because there’s just one or two people making the show. The problem is that we CAN’T make a name for it, because the industry is so fragmented, every candidate show only has 500 viewers, so nothing is universally recognizable

     Yeah I know those parodies devolved into hyper cringe within like a week but it was funny when sseth did it.
