I doubt he's ignorant of the Weimar Republic, but he may not have the full picture either.

     But that only works with players of honor, and we’re the only ones left. By now it should be apparent that we’re the only ones willing to forego the power in the interest of fair play…..and that’s why we’re losing

Which, if you consider all the damage of the Warren court and Obergefell, seems sensible, but there's that allegory: government is a gun, with two people wrestling for it, one to disarm it, one to use it. If you unload the gun, the other guy will just reload it or use it as a bludgeon, because their intent is fundamentally not the same.
