  @ACL9000 @BigTLarrity I literally had to explain the last time I got my car serviced at the dealership that they literally did nothing to the car the whole 90+ minutes I was waiting. I then stood there and watched them actually service the car.

  @WashedOutGundamPilot @NitroDubs @BigTLarrity My car has a staggered wheel setup. The shop at the place where I bought it put the back wheels on the left and the front wheels on the right. It would dart left or right when decelerating or accelerating, dove to the side under braking, and the wheels rims rubbed on hard parts. They had the gall to give me the "I've been doing this for 25 years" routine and I had to drag the guy out to show him one side with 275s and one with 255s. Suddenly it was, "Well that's embarrassing."

Unless your family is lucky enough to have kept something predating cashforclunkers or a second, sportier car, chances are increasingly good that a 20 yo hasn't even touched a manual transmission
  It's crazy, but they were only 6% or so of the output 15 years back. So they learn the steps online and assume they can figure it out as they go

He cut the crushed roof off of it and made my sister and I learn to drive it until we could shift incredibly smoothly. I was fifteen and she was right. He then let my friends learn as well, then he sold it for $50 more than he paid to a deer hunter.
  
  I did the same with a $600 Toyota with 650k miles on it for my children.

  I've seen the option come and go mid-year with Jeeps and Toyotas. Manufacturers hate having to make two things.

Our big bet here is whether they'll appreciate in value or be seen as less attractive as attitudes change. I think we'll be the boomers who prefer them, but we won't see the trend continue

  @WashedOutGundamPilot @placebo @ACL9000 @BigTLarrity They’ve actually crept up in popularity in the last couple of years, but we’re talking tenths of a percent here. The regular car with a 5-6 speed is virtually dead, outside of a few edge cases, and the barrier to entry is getting worse every year.
  
  The good news is that there are people who are big into restomods and they have great choices in aftermarket manual transmissions.

  "okay you're at 25% are you crawling forward, want an econo takeoff or a serious launch? Okay I'll give you a modest take off and preemptively shift into 4th to save gas OH WAIT DID YOU WANT A SPEED LAUNCH OKAY GIMME A SEC"
  and you spent 3 seconds to get the machine to mete out a level of power only 50% similar to what you would have gotten if you did it all yourself

  @WashedOutGundamPilot @stoner713 @ACL9000 @placebo @BigTLarrity My turbo/CVT combo actually responds pretty quickly to putting your foot down, and even faster in "sport" mode. My other car has a pretty responsive automatic too.
  
  I once drove a 5th gen Camaro 6.2 and punched it from 25ish MPH, and it had at least a full second delay before commanding a downshift into what I assume was first. Modern tuning really is a "your mileage may vary" game.

  But, short of hooking up my nervous system to a machine there's probably no way around it, all you have to convey your desire is a single control input. It always has to read your mind, and that's impossible....which is why it's easier just to have a clutch. Now you got 3 control inputs with a direct sense of immediate feedback via your foot, no guesswork needed.
