They are in pain because of society putting enormous pressure on them to conform to a pattern that doesn’t fit and treating them like shit. You are blaming the victims for their oppression here.
When trans people are not just tolerated but accepted by a family member or close friend, those suicide numbers go way down. And even more when a community supports them. And they are generally very happy in the spaces where they feel comfortable to be themselves.
As an openly queer small woman I am delighted to hang out with people where I can talk about myself and my interests freely. But put me in an environment where people are othering me, crowding me, and making nasty comments, and I’m miserable. (I live in a deep red state, there are plenty of people telling me I’m going to hell, and worse.) But going back in the closet isn’t an option, because pretending not to be fully myself is also terrible for my mental health.
