   Man, how the fuck do i get these disks to boot in ahci mode.
   
   Reset their partition table, rebooted openbsd installer (which saw them), but after install bios hangs so i have to take them out and only after switching back to ata mode theyre recognized and i can boot them. Even tried changing their type with disklabel(1) which didnt complain, but after adding 1 gpt/mbr (tried both) partition same problem.
   
   Any hints? Should i use ata like a boomer cc @pwm @dcc @p

You can't magically just tell a drive "you're XYZ format now" and it has readable data after. Migrate your data elsewhere, convert to new format, migrate back. Sucks to suck, but it's a mistake you only make once

     @p @dcc @pwm thats also the problem. it never reaches the preboot environment, its just stuck.
     
     when i installed linux successfully and then installed openbsd on the same drive, instead of being stuck it kept restarting in a loop.
     
     its a dell m4800 precision laptop

     @pernia @dcc @pwm I don't know what weird hardware you have but surely there is a pre-boot environment that allows you to see what sort of thing it will allow you to do to boot and possibly tweak settings and there is certainly a manual.

     @p @dcc @pwm its two SATA drives. One sata SSD 2.5" form factor an another sshd or just spinning rust sata in the same form factor.

     @p @dcc @pwm wierd thing is, when i installed linux on it (from ahci, after i blanked the disk and left only the partition table), it booted just fine in ahci

They will have two manuals probably (most consumer electronics places do), one for normies to email their grandmother a facebook and and the other one will say "service manual" or "field service" or "technical reference" or something and that's the one you want.

     @pernia @dcc @pwm If one of them boots and the other one doesn't, why even bother with it? If the laptop is rotting and falling apart, why fiddle with it instead of just doing the thing that works? You don't like the disk, boot it from a USB stick or PXE-boot it. Like, set up a tftp and filesystem server on your desktop machine, boot the thing over ethernet. No disks involved. That is what I am doing with my completely busted T500. (Screen broke off because of the problem with the hinges on the T500, battery was already long-dead, then the disk died.)

     Probably the best way to handle the issue is to just purchase a computer, but pernis doesn't like to do that.
