Ah, the Strangelove bot is the only one that is actually responsive, I think. All it does is check my notifications periodically, then if it sees one from someone on the list, it replies to the post that triggered the notification a few times. It replies using my account for obvious reasons. It has a pretty good success rate for getting people to stop bothering me, usually the first couple of waves result in a block; sometimes people don't realize it's a bot and they get into an argument with it.
As far as more conventional bots, there's @lainbot and @whereverbot, those two are probably the most entertaining ones. There's @fedilist that announces new instances, there's @lightbot that just turns sensor data into an image and posts it. There are some kinda boring ones, @limerickbot (generates limericks that follow the syllable stress and count correctly and then try to rhyme), @warrantcanary (what it says on the tin), @pnotifbot (counts my notifications so I have something to point at when people complain that I took a long time to get back to them). There are a few markov chain bots knocking around, like @pbort. I used to run @fediquest, but now that fedi.quest is down, I turned it off to stop it repeatedly posting the last image it got or generating the same video over and over. -

Ha, thanks. I sometimes so a weird bot as the warmup hack when I wake up, things like that, or I get a weird idea. The booru bots kinda irritate me so I try to make bots that are different. I really like the different ones, like the "this anime does not exist" bot on milker.cafe and the bot that posts Mars rover photos on abzszzratraube or the Phoenix Wright bot on gameliberty.club. Those are all bots that don't do anything another bot does.
The reply-chain problem I saw almost immediately when I first landed on fedi. There was a reminder bot, you'd say something like "In two hours, tell $someone $some_message" and there was another that was a busybox shell: you'd type a commend and it would execute it and reply with the output, and the guy was like "All right, try to escape the jail!" So someone, I forget who, this was like five years ago, kept coming up with ways to make the shell script bot trigger the calendar bot with a message that triggered the shell script bot. Like 200 messages a second, instances were getting flooded. And the shell script bot guy kept trying to come up with ways to stop it, but he was mainly focusing on preventing it from generating an @, and there are a ridiculous number of ways to generate an "@" if you have a shell.

I haven't asked graf about it, but probably it was because of the Great Mario Goatse Bot War. People complained about the gigantic Mario Goatse, I had a bot wipe it, then they got mad, so more Mario Goatses. The bots were laying waste to the place, some people didn't want to draw there because of the Mario Goatses, then nobody wanted to because of the bots, then it got big enough that nobody *could* use the site because of the bots, the system was grinding to a halt, it wouldn't load half the time...but that didn't prevent bots from firing requests at it. A couple of weeks after that, some of the Poast hardware changed and the site was never resurrected. Give me a minute to generate a video.
