man, i had forgotten the absolute bullshit that is configuring printers in windows, specially on modern windows machines, i’m even more sure now that the way to go is just get an rasp pi, set that up as a printing server and never have to deal with winblows drivers bullshit ever again.

They have intrusions in every menu and window about “CURRENT EVENTS” blaring in your face

For $100 i could probably grab a second hand laptop with better specs than the pi and use that as my printing server.
Also fun enough you can add email printing, if u don’t care just setup a google email account for printing only, configure a local email agent on the server, add a cronjob to pull email every 5 or so minutes and add a filter so that only emails with the title “print” get printed.

I'll prolly eventually find a way to neuter windows of that behavior totally... hopefully. -

That's a whole can of beans I ain't getting into, suffice to say I had to use gentle massaging to get a glued on touch screen from a clam bezel. The walking away from windows thing might be easier to do if M$ wasn't literally patching out all the ways to live without them. Heck at the bios level they got all sorts of shit laying in wait, might even be easier to just patch PC in use's bios and THEN use a directly Ethernet tethered thin client with some decent power to do heavy traffic and perhaps file system stuff for home server applications, etc. Either way it still looks like having some sort of external Mook to run as a firewall is better than windows calling home EVER. A Raspi to me is over powered in general, even the little picos or whatever they are called -

halberd (halberd@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 28-Feb-2023 11:37:48 JST halberd @EdBoatConnoisseur @Whitewall_Blasphemy @WashedOutGundamPilot Pis are far over-priced based on brand recognition. It used to be that you could get an early-age IoT *plug thingy for $30 or so, root it into a full computer, and get all the advantages of an rPi without having to deal with their fanbase.
All those companies have probably stopped making hardware and shifted to SaaS, though, if they haven't gone out of business entirely.
