   In my view, that is why there is so much nostalgia for the 1980s and 1990s from people who were not alive or barely alive then.

   They have a sense that prior to the great killing, things made more sense. Now nothing makes sense except the transactional: go to work, pay your taxes, buy the best stuff you can, save up to retire to someplace far away someday.

     @amerika @sim @KikiElara @GLFC @PodunkPotato it's also because media depicted it as something better as well. I know harassment architecture had a whole section on this, how a whole generation sees the 90s as the last good decade where columbine could never happen.
     
     Likely because the media was better and shopping malls seemed cool and nothing bad could ever happen.

     That's a good point. How much of this is based on the perceptions we have from the media? The media is our window to the outside world, to what is happening in the world... for all the current events. They can really cause fear, look no further than what happens with wars or covid19 when that became a pandemic. It's hard to know how much the media manufactures or copies from their own circle of references.

     The 1980s were apocalyptic, but the risk was tangible: nuclear war with the Soviets.

     In the 1990s, we sort of turned inward on ourselves, looking for some ideal to live for because we killed our culture with consumerism, socialism, and diversity.

     I can see how people look back on it as a more innocent and carefree time. It was: living made more sense then.

     But time has passed.

     I've heard theories that didn't help things.

     For most people, the 1980s was about getting back to some sanity after the 1960s.
