I… I am not sure what this is, but it’s excellent.

Tyrone Slothrop (slothrop@chaos.social)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Feb-2024 03:15:10 JST Tyrone Slothrop A colleague asks: “Hey, where can I download your API?”
Edit: it’s a non-technical person, go easy on them
Any good suggestions for an answer? 🤪

We might simply end up with an environment where individuals are continuously unsure of what they’re allowed to do, while big corporations just lawyer their way around anything they don’t like.
Perhaps we can find a better tool than copyright to protect the Fedi from the predations of Meta and its ilk.

Tyrone Slothrop (slothrop@chaos.social)'s status on Sunday, 04-Jun-2023 05:00:41 JST Tyrone Slothrop It seems that some parents worry about how to explain the existence of gay and trans people to their kids.
It’s trivially easy.
“Sometimes, men love men. Sometimes, women love women. Sometimes, people find out that although they have a man’s body, they’d be happier living as a woman - or the other way around.
All these people deserve to be happy and respected, just like you.”
And that’s really all there is to it.

Tyrone Slothrop (slothrop@chaos.social)'s status on Sunday, 04-Jun-2023 05:00:39 JST Tyrone Slothrop Kids, unless they’re seriously bent out of shape, have a strong sense of fairness. They’re also always busy learning about how the world works.
They instinctively understand that all people should have the same rights, even when they’re somehow “different”.
And kids know that everyone is a little different (or a lot). It’s just how things are. Gay and trans people are just one more kind of “different”, and all kinds are fine.

After getting the basics out of the way, we quickly agreed that that having just the two traditional (western) genders doesn’t really help us to make sense of the world we see before us.
The kid just shrugged and said “well, everyone’s somewhere in between on most things, aren’t they?”
And that was that.

Taking an (idealistic) journalistic perspective, the (mostly text) outputs of a system like ChatGPT are useless because, by their very nature,
*they cannot tell your readers anything new!*
They can only regurgitate what already exists.
It follows that if you´re a journalist, you can only really be replaced by an AI if you´ve been writing irrelevant drivel all along.
Much the same goes for scientists, I suppose.

The company I work for is running a massive internal GitLab platform with ca. 40.000 users.
They´re using the community version. If there´s a feature they need, they build it and contribute it upstream, where it becomes part of the community version.

This isn´t done for charitable purposes. It´s done because it makes good business sense. #FLOSS #FOSS

It also confirms everything I’ve suspected about the FTC.

Tyrone Slothrop (slothrop@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 27-Jan-2023 04:04:00 JST Tyrone Slothrop @markhughes I have no problem with advertising per se. In its place. Within limits.
Bike ads on a bike website? No problem. Artists promoting their work? More, please!
But the industry in its current state? Pushing and normalizing surveillance, rewarding outrage over debate and conflict over usefulness? Driving genocide (cf. Myanmar/Facebook)?
Burn it to the ground, the sooner the better.

Tyrone Slothrop (slothrop@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 27-Jan-2023 02:17:02 JST Tyrone Slothrop Of course our ambition shouldn’t be limited to the US.
Burning the online advertising industry to the ground needs to be a global undertaking.

Tyrone Slothrop (slothrop@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 27-Jan-2023 02:16:51 JST Tyrone Slothrop So the CEO of online ads giant IAB made a pretty… remarkable speech, saying:
"These extremists (referring to privacy advocates) are political opportunists who’ve made it their mission to cripple the advertising industry and eliminate it from the American economy and culture."
And this, friends, is our mission statement RIGHT THERE.
