   Very cool how adding an editable text label with the :mastodon: logo gets the biggest centralized code hosting site — an abusive one at that, feeding all your code to train a Microsoft-owned AI — loads of free publicity around here. 🤔

   Instead, I'm gonna send some love to @Codeberg and @forgejo, since they might actually *implement federation* for code hosting systems. :blobcatthinksmart:

   As in: joining fedi, instead of just paying lip service like that other code hosting site.

     In fact you know what? Let's make this thread about cool projects not hosted on Microsoft GitHub.

     Any self-hostable repo system instance counts (yes, that includes GitLab in my book) counts.

     Respond with a link to a repo and a paragraph-two of a description of the project, and I will boost it (unless for whatever reason I consider the project meh; it's my thread, sorry :flan_tongue: ).

     Sealious, our in-house web backend platform. It uses a declarative approach, where you define the shape of the database and accesa policies with simple objects, and it builds a fully-featured REST API and ORM based on that:

     @rysiek Notmuch is a mail indexing and search library / suite of tools. We self host a cgit site, an ikiwiki based wiki (https://notmuchmail.org), and a mailing list, which via some custom tooling also acts as our bug tracker https://nmbug.notmuchmail.org/status. Self hosting is more or less the reason the project exists (otherwise we'd all just use that google mail web thingie).

     @rysiek while my project, Nilium, is nowhere near the level it’s worth promoting (https://git.sr.ht/~nul/nilium-rs/) I’d just like to give a shout-out to SourceHut for doing commercial repo hosting right. They have all the basics in place, even in alpha, they’ll work with those who can’t pay, give free accounts to those who help development, and allow full-featured self hosting for free. Seriously they rock.

     It's the repo of my FLOSS webcomic Pepper&Carrot with all the translations (63 languages), the fonts, the website, the scripts, scenarios, the wiki, and 89 Members! The largest repo "webcomics" has over 7000 commits and 902 Merge Requests. It's hosted by Framasoft on Framagit: their Gitlab Community Edition instance.

     We moved (with no regrets) from Github in 2018, when Ms bought it. Next: I study a move to a self-hosted Forgejo (I designed their mascot).

     @rysiek we moved the Fennel programming language off microsoft github to sourcehut in 2020 and have no regrets; it's been much better for us, especially the CI

     @rysiek We're hosting a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. It's mostly on git.kernel.org, patchwork.kernel.org, and lore.kernel.org.

     reytan extracts metadata and urls to media on youtube, soundcloud and bandcamp (I'm working on the actual download part currently). it's supposed to be a yt-dlp alternative that can be embedded in weird enviroments more easily (written in rust), though limiting the amount of supported services.

     It should be noted that https://freedesktop.org/ hosts their own codeforge. Though there was a brief period where they used GitHub as they switched from CGit to GitLab.

     Seriously, if you're like me & you're digging through all the various OS components running on your computer it's only a large minority you'll find hosted on GitHub!

     @rysiek I host https://scribe.rip on sourcehut. It's an alternative frontend for reading Medium articles meant to help the internet move away from it as a centralized blog platform.

     Note that I don't self-host the code, but sourcehut is open-source and I think I could in theory.

     @rysiek It might be too commercial to fit the pattern you´re looking for, but:

     The company I work for is running a massive internal GitLab platform with ca. 40.000 users.

     They´re using the community version. If there´s a feature they need, they build it and contribute it upstream, where it becomes part of the community version.
