Homophobes discriminate on people on the basis of this alone, leading to a necessary development of a gay counter culture, and associated identity, based on the desire to not be persecuted for something outside of their control, which causes harm to nobody. This, plus time, results in where we are, today, because nobody exists in a vacuum.

Universal use of gender neutral pronouns is favorable for the development of an equitable society, anyways, and is something that should be happening, regardless, for the language - regardless of whether or not you believe there are people who experience life differently than you understand it
