And to go back to the original point: What is their real alternative to using Google location services?

@codeinabox @aral @beacondb Interesting! Thank you! @mozilla should probably support their work to become a real alternative to Google. Location data is extremely important and dangerous
@arek Well, I have about 25k photos in my collection, and the only thing it's struggling with is the face detection. But that too works, just really slowly.
Finally!
Finally I've found a Linux application to see my photos on a map! And it's beautiful, and simple, and under active development.
And it's even supposed to be able to detect faces, but that process is so slow, and can't be paused and restarted later, so I'm not sure how well it works yet.
But oh my, so far I'm very happy with #Fotema. https://github.com/blissd/fotema
@Linux4Everyone It's great that @frameworkcomputer wants to listen to the Linux community and be able to support Linux better! But launching this program asking for volunteer work before even adding Linux as an OS option when buying one of their PCs seems a bit strange. Kinda a bit exploitative, almost. I know you can order without OS and install whatever, but that does not send a message to people that Linux is a great option for these PCs.
Yeah, this is kinda horrifying https://sh.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/1dtnjvn/i_was_served_an_ad_that_featured_an_ai_photo_of/
OMG, is this what I think it is? Is it a universal search trough the menu items in applications, like that old Ubuntu HUD thing!?
I've been wanting that ever since Ubuntu introduced it, and then unfortunately got rid of it for for me unknown reasons. It's so extremely useful and a huge time saver! "Where was that thing again?" "Does this app have…?" No more questions like that, no more hunting, just search!
I really hope this is coming to #Gnome soon! Where can I read more? @tbernard
@Gargron @bigzaphod I hope the actual rule is phrased differently from your recap of it here, then. Because saying all content crested by others must be attributed does ban memes, and lots of other things, no matter the intention behind it.
@feditips It would be amazing if it just automatically created an audio only feed for this purpose. So many videos could just be audio, and would be great to be able to listen to them while out and about.
@aral @lightweight Does @eff check it's interactions here on fedi? If so I'd like you to see above and reply here, thanks.
If it's not recycled, I don't care about your "recyclable"
Jesus fucking christ, 4 out of 4 comments on my #TransDayOfVisibility toot are hatespeach. I block them, but the hate is still there, to negatively affect others. How do I remove this shit from my posts?
Yes, Daniel, "some people"…
I'm glad the people most associated with Harry Potter, except for the author, is taking such a clear stance for human rights and diversity.
Happy #TransDayOfVisibility!
#Canonical has been imperative to the growth and simplification of Linux "for human beings". There's no doubt the whole community has a lot to thank them for! The first time I tried Linux for real was with #Ubuntu 6.06. I've never learned to code or really use the terminal to any degree, but I've stayed on Linux ever since. And it's just gotten better, much thanks to Canonical.
But something happened to them.
…
They became more focused on the tech than the human beings that the tech is supposed to serve. The very thing they used to differentiate themselves got turned on the head, somehow.
Specifically the tech "invented here" is now more important than what makes Linux better for regular people.
Personally I was annoyed that they spent resources on Unity instead of making Gnome better, but ok. Many liked Unity. Then there was Mir instead of Wayland, Upstart instead of systemd, and now Snap.
…
I'm not saying Canonical no longer cares about human beings. But I can't help but wonder where the Linux ecosystem would be if Canonical worked together with the rest, instead of sinking so many resources into their own things all the time.
Competition is good. Trying out different things is good. But at some point you need to let the best win.
And for packaging it seems clear to me that that point is now, and Canonical should join the rest of the community and support Flatpak.

Finally! But this is just the beginning. We need the right to repair everything, everywhere!
