@foone Well… I hate to tell you this, but… the LLM companies have been using them as an AI scraperbot for some time. That’s why I block them.

Denis Warburton (artandtechnic@digipres.club)'s status on Thursday, 11-Jul-2024 12:49:05 JST Denis Warburton @foone I think I asked my acquaintance at the time why redbox never cut a deal with an actual distributor (as it would have saved them a lot of money). Their answer … didn’t make a lot of sense to me, but… doing it their way, I guess they didn’t have to ship anything but the machines lol.

Amazingly enough, that job required that they go to local stores, where they would buy as many copies as the store allowed of each title with their redbox debit card, followed by shucking / labeling / jacketing them, and then stocking the machines with the discs.
So, amazingly enough, the fortunes of your local Best Buy are tied up with Redbox.

The IP addresses that Google complained bitterly about being blocked, are attempting to scrape my site… and not just from Google’s domain.

I mean, when your corporate strategy encompasses stealing from everyone on the web, to redirecting search traffic away from paying clients to Google themselves, using that very same stolen content… you’re definitely gonna need a long term strategy, and sooner than you realize.

I haven’t been in the Silicon Valley area since ’96 … which is probably too long. 😂

Denis Warburton (artandtechnic@digipres.club)'s status on Friday, 24-May-2024 08:17:45 JST Denis Warburton Got on one of the toll highways this afternoon to make my way back to the thrift store I’d discovered last weekend… and found myself immediately stuck in traffic. After noticing that there only seemed to be traffic in a single direction - southbound - it hit me: this is Urban Weekend (a.k.a. Urban Beach Week).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Beach_Week
The wikipedia seemingly hasn’t been updated since 2013, so it omits that weekend’s overwhelmingly violent, criminal history.
Thankfully, I wasn’t going that far.

Denis Warburton (artandtechnic@digipres.club)'s status on Friday, 24-May-2024 08:17:44 JST Denis Warburton It took me about 90 minutes to make my way through the densely packed shelf of VHS tapes. The picture is from when I was finished with it, so it’s “more organized.”
This was a deeply unpleasant experience as the place is cramped, and difficult to move around in (in a dangerous kinda way). It was also hot, smelled of sewage from the toilet, and had flies indoors.
Ended up bringing only 12 tapes back with me; while I’d meant get 13, I’d only realized I’d forgotten one when I saw it in this pic.

It’s one of those things that becomes weird, when you realize it’s something that only people in certain areas do… but it’s not clear why.
