i hate superhero movies but my 2 cents on why all these female superhero movies and stuff keep flopping and widely suck is because they're totally hollow and inorganic and exist solely to be the token "strong girl character" thing. i don't think people dislike female protagonists, they just need to be organic and written organically with real backstories and stuff and exist for themselves vs. exist towards an agenda.

a couple scifi movies i can think of immediately with very likable and very strong female protagonists, for example, would be alien, contact, and arrival. none of these characters existed to be strong girlbosses---they just existed as the main protagonists and they had organic, normal-human-being backstories and character fleshing out. they weren't mary sues or whatever the term is called. you could have swapped any of these female leads out for male leads and the story would still work and be just as good and enthralling, because the story *wasn't* centered around them being women WOW STRONG GIRLBOSS. the story itself was just altogether solid and the characters, male or female, were written to be believable normal people in extraordinary scenarios and i don't think ever once their gender or sex came up as a central or important or pivotal plot point or story arc.

@justnormalkorean@poa.st I'll also add that the vast, vast majority (more than 80%) of all instances defederating us are Mastodon instances. So, in many respects, this is less of a "fediblock" thing and more of "Mastodon" thing. In fact, one could probably argue that fediblock itself is uniquely a Mastodon thing.

Mastodon is, itself, separate and different from the rest of the fediverse. They maintain their own culture, their own politics, their own drama. They are a world unto themselves. They might as well be on a completely different subnetwork.

I really wouldn't be sad if Mastodon just split themselves off from using AP and adopted some Mastodon-specific standard and spun off to create their own "fediverse".. because, it's very clear that Mastodon instances/users do not like the wider fediverse, do not respect the denizens of the wider fediverse, and would far prefer to be their own thing.

and not excessive. mastodon, outside of horizontally scaling out a very large instance (which is expense regardless) is probably the worst (or rather most arbitrarily restrictive and difficult to customize) choice out there

@alcea@pb.todon.de There's nothing wrong with Pleroma and I wouldn't really say it's superseded. Akkoma is fine too, though.

ActivityPub has lots of capabilities in what can be implemented. Edits are a very new thing, I'd imagine at some point they might come to Misskey and Misskey derivatives. Misskey has been around longer than Mastodon.

While Mastodon might have edits and some mute features, it also had hard-coded 500 character limits and the inability for quote-posts. So, there are trade-offs. It also lacks things like other instances like Misskey (and derivatives) have e.g. galleries, long form blog posts/pages.

But, there are plenty of fediverse softwares out there. Imho, I'd probably never use Mastodon. Just my 2 cents. I think there are a lot better alternatives out there that have great functionality out of the box vs. trying to hack around Mastodon's limitations and restrictions.
