They're basically like customised mini-timelines. It lets you choose what kind of content you see, instead of seeing everything on one home timeline.
For example, some people like to make lists featuring news sources so that whenever they want to catch up on headlines they go to their "News" list. Others might have a "sport" list, or lists about particular hobbies etc.
It's sort of like having channels on a television or radio ๐
To make anything on the Fedi show up as posts on your own server, copy and paste the address into the search box.
So, this could be a web address, or it could be an account address. Either way, it will make your server or app to show the profile or post within its own interface.
There is no single global search system for the Fediverse as all the servers are independent, and not all of them want to communicate with each other. (For example, no one would want to communicate with a server that allows spam.)
No, it's not possible at the moment, but it's a very popular suggestion.
If you're comfortable using github (which is the technical back end where many software projects are developed), you can give a thumbs up to hashtags on lists at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/7692
It's so seamless that most people don't even realise they are looking at other platforms! ๐
For example, if you click on @theatticdwellers you will see the profile of a PeerTube account which you can follow by just clicking on "follow". And the posts in that profile are PeerTube videos, which you can interact with by replying to them.
Another example, @Iancylkowski is a Pixelfed account. Click "Follow" to follow it.
Yeah, sorry about that, I only meant the projects that do actually have official logos. I was right on character limit in post ๐
The structure of the Fediverse means it will never have an official logo. The nearest we'll ever get is :fediverse: but it isn't official, nor does it claim to be.
If you ever do want to try apps, , there are quite a number you can use on iPad, for example Ice Cubes is good.
Toot! and Ivory are good too, and many others. (Plus the official app of course, which is just called "Mastodon".)
Because Mastodon is an open platform, you don't need to use the official apps at all. The third party apps get just as much access to all the features, and tend to do a better job than the official app.
p.s. I know a lot of people will have seen me post about this topic before, but am trying to respond to the kind of questions that people are asking now.
The custom emoji thing is apparently still new to many, so seemed sensible to do an "in case you missed it" post ๐
I'm sure that would be technically possible if someone could tweak one of the apps a little bit?
This place is an open platform so there's nothing to stop people making custom apps and browsers. Some people use it entirely through text, some use it on computers from the 1980s etc.
