You can copy and paste addresses from Pixelfed, PeerTube, BookWyrm etc into Mastodon's search box, their profiles will appear and you'll be able to follow them.

Good question!

Mstdn.social was much smaller when I joined it! (Also, incidentally, it is totally different to mastodon.social, it has a different owner).

When I set up my own server at GYOS I moved all my main accounts there except FediTips as I didn't want to have all my eggs in one basket. If my server goes down or gets damaged somehow, I don't want it to wipe out all the major accounts.

I think that's the term used by developers and sysadmins? Webfinger generally isn't mentioned at all in user guides.

If you want to let people know about your account on here, it's important to include your full account address (also known as a "Fediverse address").

If you paste a full Fediverse account address into the search box on any server, it will always make the account profile appear, even if previous searches drew a blank.

You can exchange account addresses with others just like you might exchange email addresses or phone numbers.

PeerTube supports audio-only uploads, and the latest version includes podcast feed support, so there's definitely potential for non-visual users.

If you follow the account, all the new posts published from that moment onward should start appearing.

Following is the main mechanism by which servers know which accounts on other servers they should be paying attention to.

Profiles on Mastodon sometimes look blank even when they're not blank 😲

It usually happens if the account is very new and/or doesn't have many followers. If you follow this kind of "blank" account, posts made after that follow will appear as normal on the profile for everyone on your server. More info:

You can avoid your profile ever looking blank to others by having at least one pinned post. Pinned posts are always visible to everyone:

Yeah, economics do (unfortunately) come more into play with video due to the much larger amount of resources it takes up compared to text and images.

But hopefully this will be less of a factor in the future, and great to hear that you considered PeerTube as an option 👍
