Today I'm doing an #OpenSUSE #MicroOS installation with encryption. Now I know to click on Partitioning to do that during the install.

Once in the running system in #GNOME Boxes, I copied /bin/mod-firstboot into /home, commented out the three lines that use ping to check for Internet, and I'm running the firstboot script from the terminal.

Went pretty well. That firstboot script takes forever because the first few Flatpaks need a LOT of dependencies. I wish the GUI was able to tell you what was happening like you would see if you ran flatpak from the command line.

Like @jorge says -- #OpenSUSE #MicroOS has some key defaults:

* Flathub out of the box with the --user flag
* Flathub Firefox out of the box
* Distrobox instead of Toolbx
* Extension Manager instead of Extensions
* Rolling release based on #Tumbleweed
* Automatic updates

Remember the #Dillo web browser? It was the browser for Damn Small Linux. That's where I first used it.

Dillo lives -- as a #Debian package, anyway. Here it is in Debian 12 Bookworm (aka Testing)

@esparta There were so many that I had thought about getting that i had to go full out on it.

Question for @jorge and other container/immutable distro users:

I get that #Toolbx and #Distrobox are the ways to add CLI apps to your immutable system, and Flatpak is for GUI apps.

What I want to do is have a kind of GUI toolbox -- a containerized desktop that doesn't affect any of my system or user files.

I'm using GNOME Boxes, but it's not robust enough -- it tends to crash if you change virtual desktops.

Any ideas on the best way to run a container with a desktop?

@jorge I "found" a thing that makes #GNOME Boxes more reliable: You need to allow it to run in the background.

I have heard about a new background utility for GNOME, but in my old #Debian GNOME, this can be done in Settings > Applications > Boxes.

OK, now I'm getting somewhere.

I am adding the Flathub repo in the terminal:

$ flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Now we're cooking!

From this ... to this! I like having a GNOME Software that just draws from Flathub. No toggling between distro repo and Flatpak repos -- much simpler!
