Interesting essay about how we are electing decay when we vote in democracy. I need to come back to this video or have discussions about this too.

Germany should have had the right to buy cheap oil or petrol from Russia, rather than having the Nordstream blown up. I should have the right to view whatever Russian propaganda that I want rather than it being banned in my country. I should have the right to have a country that isn't influenced by the EU or even the US/NATO (I'd say the Russians too but they aren't my main concern)... but we can't all have what we want because of geopolitics.
Also, I didn't realise that the post in question had been deleted when I replied so apologies on that front.
-
@lain @augustus That doesn't sound too bad... lol. But I don't know why she says this and I don't think she is much better from what the letter describes.
-
@augustus I didn't even know who she was. I don't even know if this is good or bad news...

@mangeurdenuage @awl @coolboymew @thatbrickster Sure, but at what cost? Ordinary working class people don't want to live in your area either so you'll be left with the types of people that are okay with things like violence and the area will be run down. Not that we can really do much about it.
-
@mangeurdenuage @awl @coolboymew @thatbrickster No, that isn't the case. If a place becomes so rundown, then there is a chance that it will be knocked down and rebuilt for the upper class. You will end up being paid off or evicted. This has happened before.
-
@mangeurdenuage @awl @coolboymew @thatbrickster I don't want to attract the types of people that would be attracted to that, thanks.

@augustus @deadheat I bet you are able to relate with him now!
"In 1934, Adolf Hitler, in his ambition to link the British and German royal houses, asked Princess Victoria Louise to arrange a marriage between the 40-year-old Edward and her 17-year-old daughter, Frederica of Hanover, who was at boarding school in England. Her parents refused, due to the age gap, and Frederica instead married Paul of Greece."
Interesting fact.
-
@deadheat @augustus I guess you are right.
"After the war, his conduct began to give cause for concern; he engaged in a series of sexual affairs that worried both his father and the British prime minister, Stanley Baldwin."
"The new king showed impatience with court protocol, and caused consternation among politicians by his apparent disregard for established constitutional conventions. Only months into his reign, a constitutional crisis was caused by his proposal to marry Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second."
"Later that year, the couple toured Nazi Germany, which fed rumours that he was a Nazi sympathiser. During the Second World War, Edward was at first stationed with the British Military Mission to France but after the fall of France was appointed Governor of the Bahamas. After the war, Edward spent the rest of his life in France."
Also, I wonder what he saw during the first world war. Or what he saw on his overseas tours.
-
@deadheat @augustus "As was common practice with upper-class children of the time, Edward and his younger siblings were brought up by nannies rather than directly by their parents. One of Edward's early nannies often abused him by pinching him before he was due to be presented to his parents. His subsequent crying and wailing would lead the Duke and Duchess to send him and the nanny away. The nanny was discharged after her mistreatment of the children was discovered, and she was replaced by Charlotte Bill."
What a lovely nanny to be brought up with in the early years.
-
@augustus @deadheat "Though widely travelled, Edward shared a widely held racial prejudice against foreigners and many of the Empire's subjects, believing that whites were inherently superior. In 1920, on his visit to Australia, he wrote of Indigenous Australians: "they are the most revolting form of living creatures I've ever seen!! They are the lowest known form of human beings & are the nearest thing to monkeys.""
Quite the character.
