@getimiskon Scrap that, their servers are back up. Here's their post in question: https://pleroma.envs.net/notice/AXkLRCxTteyMVk51do "run by a starnix member with the help of someone bad" like that's damning proof that I am inherently evil, but whatever.
I have since reached out to the person in question (seirdy) on a Mastodon alt, unfortunately the post I made is marked as a private mention so you'll have to take my word for it on what actually happened or if it's actually real. I have never received any response whatsoever.
@getimiskon Something something I started this instance in mid 2023, added a blockbot (then removed it after a month because seriously I just don't care either way), and made a lighthearted post saying "what if i make a fediblock post that says PLEASE BLOCK ME"
They have since then made a public fediblock post that I would try and dig up but it seems their servers are down (ha), and since then have added this instance to their Tier-0 (IIRC?) blocklist.
@getimiskon@ezio what exactly is the danger of running outdated things on the Internet precisely? sure, if you do outdated web browsing you're probably asking for trouble, but apart from that I really don't get why "9x/XP/Vista/7 online = BAD THING, you WILL get virused"
@dushman@ovivu@LizzyontheUpside "hey buds let's play Jackbox together.. no, no, not on discord. open this website to have owncast so that you can see my screen and-- no, this website. then download this app you've likely never heard of called Mumble it's fuckin really cool it does voice chats. and then connect your voice.. wait you don't have accounts on that? no, I won't just use Discord group chats, this is superior!"
I suppose this answers my question of what place C++ has.
C++ is a chore to set up manually but is very practical for efficient, sorta low-level code that really doesn't need inefficiencies or bloat. Things like mathematical calculations. C# is for when you damn well know you're not going to escape the Microsoft Windows hellscape, maybe you want to make programs explicitly for that platform. Rust, I guess, would be the modern-ish alternative to C++/C# in the sense that sure, it's probably gonna be more bloated and somewhat less efficient, but under modern-day expectations of deploying it on computers and software of today, for more complex programs it'll make sense.
Hell, you could even mix and match some programming languages, too. C++ with Rust/Java and whatnot.
@dushman@beebles The philosophy, under modern use cases and expectations, I think can make sense but to act as if it is a full-on computer the same way Windows or Linux computers behave is not exactly right.
Also, "cloud gaming machine". That's all these computers will ever do; be a client for an online cloud gaming service not unlike Stadia or GeForce NOW, and not play games. Expectations are to be tempered: this is a substitute, not a replacement.
@dushman@beebles Remember, the Chrome OS demographic just want a laptop that works enough for them to do their stuff mostly performed on web apps. They don't really care that Google is spyware and bad and oh my golly goshness, they just want to live a life.
@dushman@beebles For the very same reason people use Windows over Linux, the average Chrome OS person can't reasonably be expected to know to use Linux, which I also remind is a completely different OS philosophy than Chrome, that being to use actual programs that aren't always web apps regardless. They want something that works.
@dushman@beebles I entirely agree with you, and I'm all onboard with Linux becoming the de facto standard, for who that can apply to. I'm in tech classes that basically teach the more power-user stuff (in corpo language admittedly) and I absolutely think that Linux would fit this "lifestyle" (for the lack of a better term) just as much if not more than Windows. However, the "normie" that just wants to chat with friends on Discord and whatnot, do their Google or Microsoft Office work, or just go on Facebook, Instagram, things like that, they don't care that they're running on entirely moral, community-driven stuff. Windows and Chrome OS will do the job just fine for them, and it won't needlessly complicate things.
(also it's getting tiring to cut and paste my messages every time you send a new reply lmao)
Apologies for the mass follows; I'm still the same person, just on my own instance for now!Hello there, and welcome to the account manned by an immature person that dictates an entire instance. (Don't worry, no one else is suffering here.)I am the same person as @atlas_core@pl.starnix.network, so don't be surprised. Matter of fact, you'll know more about me by reading there.
