@yakumo_izuru@misskey.m544.net Still preferable to the alternative considering on the Fediverse (a) you have choices with your "service provider" (instance + maintainers) + (b) you should be choosing a home with people who you trust and who have similar values or interests + (c) you can deploy your own server if you so choose and have complete control for yourself.
Also ignores the fact that relays exist, and that many Fedi softwares provide for Bubble timelines. Or, importable lists. But, braindead normie types eat shit up like "corporate managed algorithmic timelines". ---Having a company decide what content you should be looking at is actually a feature!
@Moon@den.raccoon.quest You do own your identity on the Fediverse if you host your own server. The thing with ActivityPub is that it can be as decentralized as one likes, it just requires active participation from the community in trying to achieve high levels of decentralization instead of thousands of normies coagulating onto a few Mastodon scabs.
@Hyolobrika@social.fbxl.net No, they could not. However, they also couldn't really work computers in general. I think it's a moot question considering things like that. "Could someone who never experienced modern computing run their own web server?" No, probably not. However, the nature of the Fediverse is and should be (in my opinion) that not necessarily of individuals but of communities. These softwares are facilitated to support little communities. In an ideal scenario, versus forcing the model into a P2P setup, you could have friends or families maintain an instance for friends and family, or something to that effect and size. Servers of 20 users vs. servers of 200--2000 users/servers of 1. That's kind of the comfy sweet-spot for the Fediverse.
