@coolboymew @icedquinn @kaia @mangeurdenuage @ooignignoktoo Yeah. The hosting company provided automatic backups, but apparently, automatic database backups means jack these days. Lesson learned on my part. Will be backing everything up in multiple ways from now on.
@coolboymew @icedquinn @kaia @mangeurdenuage @ooignignoktoo I know it took a while, but I was finally able to restore the posts. Apologies for the inconvenience. Found a Google cached page that contained the original content, so I re-imported it to the website and restored the posts. Tested the original URLs and it seems to work on my end. Only thought of it after the developers told me that they couldn't find any post to restore today.
Yeah, AI is totally going to take over the role of journalists. Just look at this compelling AI article about the illusive disease known as "Ligma": https://www.credihealth.com/blog/what-is-ligma-disease-a-cause-for-concern

@coolboymew It would be really awful if Google did end up doing a surprise deal striking. It would only further incentivize profiting off of surveillance capitalism, greatly distort the market, likely reduce payouts for smaller players using things like Adsense, and would even work to Google's detriment as it would establish a precedent that this warmed interpretation of copyright law is becoming the expected norm. One way or another, nothing good would come out of such a deal.
News Media Canada Admits They May Have Made a Mistake With the Online News Act
Major lobbyist organization, News Media Canada, is asking the government to accommodate Google with the Online News Act.
Throughout the legislative process, supporters of the Online News Act have reacted overwhelmingly bad to a

@toiletpaper @coolboymew Creators can certainly offshore. In fact, I've seen a couple creators openly contemplate this option.
The one certainty in this situation is that things are going to get bad. The question is just how bad it's going to get. It can be just audiences getting split nationally vs internationally (creators will more often then not choose the latter). Worst case scenario, enough demands tacked on to this compel affected platforms to leave. Significantly messier.
There are some #pizza toppings that some people don't like. Some people don't like Hawaiian pizza. Others don't like anchovies on their pizza. Still, I think more people would agree that they don't like a loaded handgun as a pizza topping: https://news.yahoo.com/loaded-gun-found-pizza-box-022859934.html
An Overview of the Canadian Government “Draft Regulations” of the Online News Act
With the Canadian government releasing the draft regulations of the Online News Act, we decided to take a look inside and see what we find.

Let Me Rewrite that For You: Canada’s Online News Act Explained
A news article published on CTV claims to explain the Online News Act. The problem is that it wasn't that good at it.
Yesterday, we published an article noting the decision by mainstream media outlets to refuse to run ads. In it, we explained that while it is well w

@keithzg @coolboymew Indeed. With the government already openly contemplating issuing massive bailouts, the hedge fund managers and CEOs will be happy in the end. The actual people behind news coverage? Not so much.
@coolboymew @Hoss@shitpost.cloud I'm not so sure Google (or Facebook for that matter) will actually get hurt by this. The data was pretty consistent in that very few interactions revolve around news for them.
I mean, even I would shrug off an, at most, 2% loss in traffic and carry on like nothing happened. The media companies, however, are a different story with seeing stats of 40%-60% in a potential loss of traffic. Any cash strapped media organization would, at minimum, get a new limp from that.

@joemcken @mmasnick The Canadian government, I think, has finally realized they f***ed up. They are currently in panicked emergency meetings to try and get the platforms to not block news links altogether. Apparently, Facebook was hours away from pulling the news block lever before the government finally communicated with them.
