@mint @realman543 @Vaghrad @Inginsub @RustyCrab @cassidyclown @creamqueen A few years back there was a guy in Riverside that put red and blue lights and a siren on his car, just hung out in gas stations in the desert until he spotted a lady, then pulled the car over and did rapes. His car didn't even look like a cop car, just you can't tell at night. After the news hit, I imagine the Riverside County Sheriff's Department had a harder time getting people to pull over for busted tail lights. -

I have just read a paragraph that says that the thing people on Stormfront are unified about is white supremacy despite many other topics being discussed, with the implication that white supremacy just sort of snuck in and took over, captivating the hearts and minds, instead of an interest in that topic being the reason people go there to begin with because that's what they put on the sign. She cites three papers to say the equivalent of "People visiting McDonald's are all interested in burgers for some reason!" -

@mint @Vaghrad @RustyCrab @cassidyclown @creamqueen @Inginsub I didn't claim to be an expert, but I would have said the same thing before the FBI emailed me, because I didn't make the remarks based on that one incident, that's just the incident people asked about.
You could reason it out for nothing: it's easy to spoof a number, nobody makes a threat unless they want to compel you without having to do anything, nobody makes a smaller threat than they could plausibly make, and this matches the "dumb kids on internet playing mind games" M.O. perfectly. Why would the Secret goddamn Service say "We'll call your job and tell them you were racist!" instead of "We'll haul you in front of a DOJ prosecutor"? And I'd like to see one--one!--example where the Secret Service did this. The cops don't even do this, but the Secret Service is not a department that complains about budget shortfalls, and they have a habit of popping into people's houses unexpectedly.

Nothing about that phone call matches how feds work, including the fact that it was a mysterious and vaguely threatening phone call. -

@cassidyclown @Vaghrad @RustyCrab @mint It was weeks, but the screenshot they sent had a relative timestamp on it. They took a screenshot within hours, didn't ask me until weeks later, and wrote "URGENT:" in the subject line.
Anyway, it turns out that the guy that posted the threat was Torswats, so they were probably trying to find him for that reason rather than the fake threat itself. -

Yeah, they probably would have asked you instead of stalking @creamqueen from a license plate number. They don't have time to do that. They will if they've got to, but first they ask you, then either they subpoena or threaten you, then they show up at someone's house. They don't give you a warning, it's the Secret Service, they'll just refer it to local law enforcement if it's not worth making an arrest.

@Vaghrad @RustyCrab @cassidyclown Yeah, especially since they seemed to probe it, like they'd hit an account that got banned, then immediately go to the registration page. For a while, there were so many of them searching for a specific Pawoo account that I killed off any IP that searched for that account (only one post had federated to FSE, picture of a child and a mega.nz link from an account that had already been banned from Pawoo, so I made an educated guess; I killed that account and anyone that had interacted with the post). I think the only time I ever *automatically* killed IPs just for a search term, usually it would ping me and I'd look.
The nice thing about them is they can be analyzed after the fact for diagnostics. The bad thing about them is they can be analyzed after the fact for feds. The compromise was I'd keep just two days and change around usually, enough that I could spot problems but not enough that I was creating an incentive to send me a subpoena or show up with a warrant. Sometimes I'd keep around aggregates (mostly performance stuff, or when I was trying to figure out why I got a $500 bandwidth overage bill) or excerpts (e.g., if something weird was going on, I'd grep the file for the weirdness and squirrel it away so if it happened again, I could check if it was the same thing or something else). -

@dcc @IAMAL_PHARIUS @brokeassredneck It's just a config option, but it's named really close to this other one that *doesn't* show the filenames in the posts. I forget which one it is. It used to be the default but (actual occurrence) Gargron kept making fun of the "ugly filenames". -
