From today's AFR, pragmatism will be the death of us.
The stupid hurts.

Carbon emissions are now growing faster than before the pandemic
>Instead of a “green recovery”, global greenhouse gas emissions are rising much faster now than they did in the decade preceding the global pandemic. Emissions rose 1.3 per cent to 57.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2023. That is a far faster annual rate of growth than during the decade 2010-2019, when emissions grew on average 0.8 per cent per year
>All sources of greenhouse gas emissions except land use are rising,

Not surprising I guess, just open the flight radar web page, or glance out the window at the endless cars , hear endless dogs barking (large meat eating pets). We haven't changed how we act, which would typically lead to changing how we vote.
Nearly everywhere there has been minor gains by Greens they are in retreat rather the massive surge needed to change policy. We concentrate on stupid shit like ecars rather then the changes needed.
Monkeys ‘falling out of trees like apples’ in Mexico amid brutal heatwave
https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/21/monkeys-mexico-heatwave
>“They were falling out of the trees like apples,” Pozo said. “They were in a state of severe dehydration, and they died within a matter of minutes.” Already weakened, Pozo says the falls from dozens of yards (meters) up inflict additional damage that often finishes the monkeys off.
>By 9 May at least nine cities in Mexico had set temperature records,
*‘No one should have more than €10m’: the author of Limitarianism on why the super-rich need to level down radically*
>For Ingrid Robeyns, a professor of philosophy and economics at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, the urgency of that question is long overdue. Not only does Robeyns argue for a limit to wealth, she is prepared to put a number on it. Or actually two numbers: the first a political ambition, the second an appeal to ethical conscience. The first is this: “In a country with a socioeconomic profile similar to the Netherlands, where I live, we should aim to create a society in which no one has more than €10m.
>This year’s report, Inequality Inc, again articulates a trend that we have all witnessed for the past four decades and more. While most people, locally, nationally, globally, try to survive on the same or less, the rich and the very rich become phenomenally more wealthy year by year. Since 2020, the report reveals, “60% of humanity has grown poorer, [while] billionaires are now $3.3tn or 34% richer than they were at the beginning of this decade of crisis.” The wealth of the world’s five richest men has more than doubled in that period, adding an unprecedented $464bn to their fortunes.

And we let them, with how we keep voting for the orthodoxy ...stop that, please ... For the sake of the rest of us!!!! Nothing will change if voters keep doing the same thing.
Second biggest killer of children in the US after guns
50 toddlers die every week in the US just from being reversed over in driveways
More Americans have died from road deaths since the turn of the century then killed in WW1 and WW2 combined
11,000 die every year in Australia from car pollution, not just from tail pipes but brakes and tyres.
Urban Heat Island effect from concrete and asphalt roads making cities unlivable.
30%-40% of land in cities is given over to Cars.
On and on...
How motor-normativty became ingrained is beyond my understanding but perhaps goes to explain why no real care is ahown about climate change as well.
The truly bizzare thing is we know it can be done differently and BETTER as we have actual examples. Eg
@basyl
To be fair people have it just never gains traction eg Professor Kevin Anderson has pointed this out since I first heard a lecture of his in 2012.
No ones telling entitled developed world folk they can't drive #ecars and fly all over the world nor cool/heat the entire paper thin McMansion with ducted HVAC/nor the verybrich fly thier private jets and fill their personal yachs with $1/4 mil of diesel.
It's often pointed out we could have a 32% emissions cut in about 2 weeks if we got rich people to live like the average European. Not enough but it gives us some breathing space.
