@lori I've never seen a computer game use as much RAM as a web browser. I've never seen anything use as much RAM as a web browser.
I see people insisting now that they need 32 GB of RAM on a personal computer, and I look at my fifteen year old desktop that almost never uses more than 2 GB of RAM and a fraction of a percent of CPU time. The performance constraints are disk access time and, with some games, GPU.
@lori Modern personal computers are massively overpowered for what people actually want to do with them, and if the Web wasn't a nightmare of aggressive advertising, most people's needs could be met with cheap, energy efficient SBCs.
It makes me angry.
@aral Why are you attacking people who confronted their employer and lost their jobs? They did what we need far more people to do.
@shalf @aral I've kind of assumed that CCC is big and influential enough that it probably has some flaws mixed in with the good it's done.
@aral @baldur In my limited experience of each, writing code feels astonishingly like writing text. And I've been told the most important part of creative writing is the process of revision. You revise and revise and revise. That's where you spend most of your time.
@whitequark @foone I've thought the best thing about Space Engineers is that everything is half broken and poorly documented and the UI is clumsy, but you can still make things work somehow, which seems like a pretty decent simulation of engineering. Or at least of being a second rate computer technician.
@triptych This puts me in mind of @aral and his Small Web project.
@liaizon "It's open source, so anyone can use it", is different from, "We support local governments who use it", which is again different from, "We went to a police conference to advertise our services".
