Lorewegian ๐ (lore@berserker.town)'s status on Friday, 04-Aug-2023 19:13:30 JST Lorewegian ๐ my Windows sysadmin friend was assigned a Linux sysadmin task because everyone else was vacation.
it was about resizing partitions on a VMware machine.
he started asking me for help after he had already run resizefs on a mounted filesystem (eek!), without resizing the volume/mapper devices first (eek!), and he was trying to do this without downtime ๐ฌ
"it's so simple to do on Windows..."

Lorewegian ๐ (lore@berserker.town)'s status on Saturday, 08-Jul-2023 18:09:20 JST Lorewegian ๐ trying to get different bits of Linux software to work together harmoniously will quickly introduce you to the internal politics and infighting of the FOSS world.
"this isn't working."
"it's those guys' fault."
"i don't care. make it work."

Lorewegian ๐ (lore@berserker.town)'s status on Wednesday, 28-Jun-2023 20:24:08 JST Lorewegian ๐ if you ever wished you could snuggle a computer, i've got you covered. my MacBook Pro has built-in pillows, and they decided to fluff up the other day.

Lorewegian ๐ (lore@berserker.town)'s status on Wednesday, 28-Jun-2023 20:24:07 JST Lorewegian ๐ this is still sitting in my house. and it actually powers up just fine. the batteries appear to have fluffed up slowly over time. i have no idea how long they've been that way. the reason i haven't thrown it out is because i need it to extract files from an APFS drive. you don't usually have extra Macs sitting around just for fun, unless you're obscenely rich.

Lorewegian ๐ (lore@berserker.town)'s status on Wednesday, 28-Jun-2023 20:24:06 JST Lorewegian ๐ i'm wondering how much it would cost to pay for a battery replacement. the iFixIt guide for DIYing it was very long and full of warnings, so i'm thinking "expensive" and not worth it.

Lorewegian ๐ (lore@berserker.town)'s status on Wednesday, 28-Jun-2023 20:24:05 JST Lorewegian ๐ i never removed the bottom lid of a MacBook and had it go "boing" before. the whole case was warped and as each screw got undone, the lid bounced up.

Lorewegian ๐ (lore@berserker.town)'s status on Wednesday, 28-Jun-2023 20:24:04 JST Lorewegian ๐ the MBP with the puffed-up batteries is powered on now, to run the rsync backup script i had already written for it.
for some reason, even though i had configured it to run in a cron job, it never actually did this, and i apparently never remembered to check that it was working.
it's not going to be a perfect backup. some file attributes will be lost as well as some protected system directories (that not even the root account can access), but stuff like documents will be preserved just fine.
some things are just impossible to transfer to another OS, such as Logic Pro X projects, though.
