That's my experience too. Obviously it can't run Photoshop plugins, but otherwise it's bordering on drop-in replacement.

No idea why the devs are so shy about it and do not want to compare Krita against Photoshop.

Krita is surprisingly good. Finding out about it spared me the misery of having to continue using GIMP.
