Alright that's a lot of bullshit. I don't know why you think we're gullible enough to believe Facebook is well intentioned, but you're already discussing a plan and completely blaming the potential destruction of the fediverse on our own actions.

You're giving us no choice. Either we show Facebook and they'll haber mercy upon us, or well be destroyed. You're using convoluted reasoning and carefully chosen words to give us an ultimatum.

So let me ask the question again:

Why should we TRUST facebook? How can we be assured it won't create a rug pull? Can we be guaranteed that it won't abuse its power once it gets enough hold of the market?

No, we cannot. As a corporation, if Facebook wants to do something bad, it will. It has already done so.

And even if everyone signed a contract, what would be the worst penalty for Facebook? A few million dollars lost in fines and a slap on the hand.

If Facebook cannot be held accountable, it cannot be trusted.

Besides, why are you implying that joining Facebook has any advantages at all for us?

You got it all wrong; for you, success means instances with large number of users, when large instances precisely are the most problematic.

Not to mention that if Facebook sponsors instances, it's effectively controlling them. We don't want a centralized silo using a federated infrastructure. The point of the fediverse is not to cover the world, it's to have a space safe from fascism and corporate power.

Allowing Facebook in the fediverse is throwing the fediverse's raison d'etre into the garbage.

So you and your sockpuppets can fuck off. You're not welcome here.

Every day we see the news, and tons of horrible, horrible things are happening. Our rights are being destroyed by bigots and corrupted people in power, and we're tired of marching, getting assaulted, hated on, and even arrested.

Those of us who don't directly experience these things are still crying in despair, you know why? Because in online spaces cis people don't give a shit about us; they'd rather not hear anything and just play their wizard game without having to worry about guilt.

Then the worst ones say: who fucking cares? And that feels like we're alone. We have no one to defend us but ourselves. That's precisely the time we need allies.

If you see a trans person suffering online, send them a virtual hug. It may not change much, but at least it makes our pain manageable. Receiving hugs from trans people feels different, because we know we're on the same boat. But you're not.

You're one of the outsiders, and you don't really need to feel bad for our situation. That puts you in a privileged position, and that's precisely why your support matters so much to us. It's the feeling that there's at least one human being who actually cares.

God, I wish I was fucking kidding.

If we're really going to go the AI route, we first need to build a database of variable human faces of all races, ethnicities and variations, looking front, sideways, and 3/4s, with annotated metadata for the chin, nose, eye points, etc. so that 3d models can be obtained from them.

And I'm not talking about a few hundred. I mean at least ten thousand (and I'm think I'm still underestimating the quantity needed).

Perhaps a hundred thousand sample human faces (and why not, bodies?) would do the trick. Pay the models a good compensation for having their faces (and / or bodies) get in the database, and voilá. You can start generating images now.

There's no other way. You want real faces? Scan real humans, but scientifically and with enough statistical variation. From ALL countries.

A lot of portraits of women generated by Stable Diffusion look like... check this out...

I can see Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Ciri from the Witcher, and oh my god is that Lady Gaga? :blobfacepalm:

Curiously, and I've been searching through several pages in the Lexica webpage (it's a Stable Diffusion search engine), I haven't found any single portrait that looks like... say... Avril Lavigne, or Rose Leslie, or Ally Sheedy, or... any other non-conventionally-beautiful girls (which you CAN find in DDG search, for example). Nope. It's always the popular beauty queens that appear in Stable Diffusion generated images. The same faces over and over and over and over.

It's almost like they're clones of each other.

Okay, how did this happen?

Here's my hypothesis:

1) Hollywood tends to prefer women that seem conventionally attractive. Variability be damned, only pick the hottest girls.

2) Artists use the hot Hollywood girls for their studies. Or, you know, anime faces.

3) The artists' studies get sucked in by the opt-out model of Stable Diffusion

4) Suddenly everything Stable Diffusion does is recycling the same faces over and over (and over and over...)

Until iamge generation AIs start to learn actual human anatomy and introduce variability into their models, the whole thing is doomed to be dull and repetitive.

I really, REALLY hope I'm not the first one to notice.

I get it - not everyone was born to be a systems engineer, but at least learn the basics of what technology runs your daily lives, people!

Microblogging was designed to be ephemeral purely out of capitalist interests. We need a more permanent solution to share it thoughts, and link people to them.

I see the same points shared in here over and over. Whether they're about racism, or open source, or walled gardens, or capitalism, people keep repeating them because this place has no capability for history.

We're trying to decide the future of the internet but it's as if we had lost the ability to write. Without a permanent medium, there is no history. We're days away from becoming the online version of Göbekli Tepe.

I recall reading an old cyberpunk comic about a city where they replaced dates with "N years ago", and this was by design. Without history, people can easily lose their collective identity, which can easily be replaced by the current day's fads. This is what happened to Twitter. A ban and boom, all your post history is gone. And here we inherit the design faults of that platform. We are writing on the sand, on the dunes of short-lived server caches.

We need to claim our voices back and have permanent, calendared, searchable places to share our written thoughts. Even with activityPub, even with democratized moderation protocols, microblogging won't cut it.

We need to resurrect the blog.
