The violent Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption on 15 January 2022 not only injected ash into the stratosphere but also large amounts of water vapor, breaking all records for direct injection of water vapor, by a volcano or otherwise, in the satellite era. This is not surprising since the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai caldera was formerly situated 150 m below sea level. The massive blast injected water vapor up to altitudes as high as 53 km. Using measurements from the Microwave Limb Sounder on NASA’s Aura satellite, we estimate that the excess water vapor is equivalent to around 10% of the amount of water vapor typically residing in the stratosphere. Unlike previous strong eruptions, this event may not cool the surface, but rather it could potentially warm the surface due to the excess water vapor.
@HebrideanHecate I have no idea, sorry. I know if you make a double portion of Thai curry and freeze half then that doesn’t separate, but that would have been more useful to say yesterday.
I do have a (male) flower on one of the other plants, but there’s no sign of the weather improving in the next fortnight. Half tempted to yank them out and start putting winter crops in there. As it is, I’ve direct sown more beans around them as they’ll produce quicker if it warms up.
@thatguyoverthere I’ve not had mains sewage in a decade. It’s not a problem as long as you keep an eye on it, but I’d be a bit dubious about opening a disused septic system up without getting the drainage field checked out.
I was saying to someone else, I think a big chunk of the electric question is latitude: having to turn the lights on at 3pm in winter probably makes you appreciate it more.
@Marshall Genuine question. I was talking to an old lady earlier who remembers before they arrived, and had just been telling me stories about how hard it was to get to the well when it snowed, so I was surprised that she said electricity.
Mysterious black thing following Dog down the road for a few minutes earlier. I hypothesise it was related to the equally mysterious glowing patch in the clouds.
Ok, I’ve just followed three different guides to linking to a specific time stamp on YouTube and none of them worked, so you’ll have to skip to 9m50s.
She seems to be saying that she has the same electrical circuit hooked into the grid and solar. I thought that was absolutely thoroughly unsafe. Anyone know better?
“It seems magical that the power goes both ways. I didn’t know that was possible.”
@DotardTed Thanks, that confirms what I was thinking. Maybe we’re missing something, she’s usually pretty sensible, but I didn’t see any sign of a physical switch,
