    Non-stop doom and gloom for years and years sounds miserable. I guess their strategy was to keep people hooked in the hopes that things will get better at some point?

    A good writer makes his story dark story in order to convey a message or a moral. even the darkest of classical stories were understood to be the author trying to convey how he felt at that point.

    Making your story dark for the sake of it is just tasteless and pointless.
