Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Wednesday, 29-May-2024 11:53:59 JST Tech Tangents Alright, yeah. The future is absolutely going to be horrible.
I cannot launch this game, that I have previously played on this console, THAT IS ON A DISC, because I'm not signed in.

Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Wednesday, 29-May-2024 08:34:14 JST Tech Tangents Wow this is lame, on a PS5 it's possible to update the system firmware without updating the controller in a way that makes them incompatible.
Sure, I can update my controller to fix this now. What about 20 years from now though?
I wonder if this is one way, and this controller won't be able to work with older firmwares after updating? The future is terrible.

Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Thursday, 19-Oct-2023 03:09:53 JST Tech Tangents @foone My next video is about the origins of the 3.5in floppy which is why I'm curious about this. It predates the PC so it was doing its own thing. HP was actually the 3rd company to release a product using it.

Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Thursday, 19-Oct-2023 03:02:02 JST Tech Tangents @foone Yep, those are Sony drives from the early 80s too!
But I cannot figure out why they are that exact height which doesn't match anything else I can find. I'm guessing they predated any standard for the smaller drive bay.

I give you, a firewire flash drive!

Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Friday, 22-Sep-2023 02:20:45 JST Tech Tangents @foone I didn't actually know that was a thing...I do need one of those.
I have been using my 5160 here to piggy back on my VGA over CAT cable setup for remote video capture, but I got some HDMI over CAT adapters recently so I could still totally do that!

Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Friday, 22-Sep-2023 02:12:43 JST Tech Tangents @foone I've got some computer monitors with BNC inputs, I wonder if there was ever a VGA card with outputs?
Sounds like it's time for a clone Voodoo 2 card with BNC!

Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Wednesday, 20-Sep-2023 02:22:08 JST Tech Tangents Huh, RSA is a lot older than I would have guessed. Now I kind of want to try generating my next pubkey on a 5150 since I know it's possible with this ad from PC Mag Jun 26, 1984!

Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Sunday, 04-Jun-2023 07:33:54 JST Tech Tangents It took me neaely 5 years to find, but I *finally* managed to get a Borland development environment for DOS that I think will support MDA for multimonitor debugging!
There are lots of Pascal sets out there, but I was holding out for C/C++ and I got one that seems complete and unused! -
Tech Tangents (techtangents@dialup.space)'s status on Friday, 03-Feb-2023 04:25:23 JST Tech Tangents @pawlicker I'll be going over that in the video, but in short you need the linking program (usually lsl, com) and an ODI driver for your NIC. then you the IPX interface (something like ipxodi, com) to get the port established. From there Doom just kind of "finds" it because IPX is pretty noisy and broadcasts everything to everyone.
