@mntmn @holo_memory i'm from the UK, and i noticed in about 2005 nobody really knew what to call them, but by 2010 most people i knew IRL would call them a "USB stick". i think this is because:
- usage of 'drive' implied to a lot of people that you might be talking about an external HDD
- they're stick-shaped, or at least used to be when they were larger, and they stick out of the front of a PC in a conspicuous and memorable way
- Memory Stick was probably a better term but sony already stole it

i think the reason ads are such a widely attractive revenue stream is probably because they’re kind of an odd exception: it’s one of the few non-consensual economic interactions that hasn’t been made illegal. they’re kind of in the same category of thing, albeit with lesser severity, as “guy washes your car while you’re waiting in traffic and then demands payment” or maybe even “guy takes your phone and runs away with it”

i find visual studio code weirdly unusable and it's taken me years to work out why: the fucking hand cursor. all the clickable UI elements change the mouse cursor to a goddamn hand! and theres no way to switch it off. my workaround every time i encounter this issue every couple years is to close visual studio code and uninstall it

im sure you can do per-application cursor overrides on linux by creating some files called like cursor.override.d/10-disable-hand-cursors-vscode.conf inside a maze of directories that will stop working in 3 months when you update the window manager, or on windows by installing a 10kb exe called "Bud's Cursor Smasher" that sits in the system tray with a little icon of bud himself giving you a thumbs up and a tooltip keeping track of Number Of Cursor's Smashed

there's a couple of issues open on this and one was closed as "not a bug, this is intentional, we really want our program thats actually a web page to feel like a web page" and the other is still open, with some comments a couple weeks ago like "yo is this ever going to be looked at, it should be like 8 lines of code to make this a config option surely"

ive been wracking my brains for almost two years trying to come up with a good project that would involve me needing to generate a bunch of text using an LLM. i'm fascinated by the technology, especially tweaking it and automating it. but every single damn time i try to actually apply it to anything, it becomes very apparent very fast that, in every case, the only realistic, interesting, and fun way to "generate a bunch of text" that actually fulfills my requirements is to "write it myself"
