at some point around 2008 i realised i was saying "basically" too often and instead replaced it with the word "essentially", which i say just as often, if not more often

josef (jk@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 15-May-2024 18:31:55 JST josef i do think that firefox is compromised by hostile actors, not in a jia tan way, but in a cia field sabotage manual way. it probably only costs tens of thousands of dollars to force a software project to make decisions that lead it into decline and obscurity

josef (jk@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 27-Apr-2024 08:04:18 JST josef late-90s computer peripherals are all like. appears as a normal 3-button mouse. but the buttons have different icons on them resembling a globe, a star, and an arrow. when you press the left mouse button, instead of clicking, it types the string "www.website" into your computer. pressing the middle button opens the AOL signup page. when you press the right mouse button, it opens up realplayer, and, after 45 seconds of loading, plays a short low-res video of a guy yelling "i'm surfing the web!"

josef (jk@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 01-Apr-2024 22:14:37 JST josef corporations love to come up with new words for things that already have a name, and what's really creepy is that sometimes people even go along with it. like for instance i saw someone unironically say "preloved" instead of "preowned"
-
josef (jk@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 01-Apr-2024 22:14:36 JST josef of course "preowned" is really just a euphemism for "second hand"

josef (jk@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 10-Mar-2024 19:31:24 JST josef the entire decade-long era of the "xbox 360 generation" of games are so visually unappealing to me, personally. but what's interesting about this, is that it's not a hindsight thing where they look dated nowadays: even at the time i noticed that games had taken a nosedive in aesthetics, and i ended up not buying any new games or consoles for almost a decade purely due to everything being in a style that i found so off-putting

josef (jk@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 14-Jan-2024 09:05:59 JST josef browsers used to let you access ftp servers. it was a thing you could count on that was useful sometimes, but at some point, it just went away. for example, chrome got rid of it a few years ago probably, which kinda sucks. anyway i thought "i bet firefox still has that, they're the Good one" so i opened firefox, and nope! not only did they also remove their ftp functionality too but the fucking "Recommended by Pocket" spam had reappeared since i last used the browser. cmon it's just embarrassing

josef (jk@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 14-Jan-2024 09:05:58 JST josef the future of browsers is you can use any browser you like, so long as it includes a special quirksmode clientside polyfill plugin addon extension that handily detects whether the current site is chrome-only, and if so, boots a sandboxed chrome running in webassembly into the current tab and reloads the page inside that instead

josef (jk@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 14-Jan-2024 09:05:58 JST josef the aggravating thing about firefox isn't it being less successful or less financially viable or less technically advanced compared to its competitors or whatever. its the weird, unforced errors. inexplicable, unless google handed a couple of firefox devs a bitcoin or two and a copy of the CIA's Simple Sabotage Field Manual (1944)

doctor: well. lets put it this way. you're full of microplastics and teflon. like everyone in your generation youve been exposed to so much BPA, talc asbestos, aspartame, and volatile organic IKEA offgassing compounds that you have, to use the medical term, transformed, into what we could call, to use the medical term, a 'cryptid'. morally you're on team nature, as culpable as the weather. and your lifestyle needs improvement. you should get into e-sports
