Just read an article about chatgpt "lying" about someone being dead and it's like "I asked it for the link to the obituary but it doubled down on the lie and provided a fake link instead" and I'm begging people to understand that it's a statistical model, it doesn't know it's lying so it can't "double down". The statistically probably answer to "where is the link" is not "I'm sorry I made it all up", it's a link. It doesn't even know what a link is, it just knows vaguely what one looks like so you're basically asking it "generate a plausible looking link to an obituary in the guardian" and it did
It's funny that I'm considered a talented programmer but whenever people use programming culture terms at me like cargo culting, bike shedding, or yak shaving, I have no idea what they mean :')
It's not for lack of looking those terms up either. Their definitions are pretty vague, so they never stick in my brain and I don't encounter terms like them "in the wild" often enough to have an intuitive understanding of their meaning
chrome getting so big and monopolistic that microsoft tries to do a hostile takeover by building a browser using chrome's tech and then saying "no you dont need chrome, edge uses the same tech anyway!" when people visit the chrome download page is funny as shit
Hi fediverse, I'm finally doing my much overdue #introduction post!
I'm a #GameDev with a decade of experience, having founded Kitsune Games in March 2013. I'm currently focused on #KitsuneTails, a queer platformer in the style of beloved classics where you play a kitsune on a journey through a land inspired by Japanese mythology. In the past I've released games such as Super Bernie World, MidBoss, and more.
I'm also working on a fantasy console called the #Mega68k, which runs on the Motorola 68000 CPU. Additionally, I create a series of videos called #CodingHistory, which explores how 3D techniques from the 90s worked. I also like programming language development and make a lot of toy languages that don't go anywhere, and am trying to liven up the #PLDev hashtag on mastodon.
Especially stop this if you are a cis straight white dude who works in tech and as a democratic party operative who's never had to worry about food on the table your entire goddamn life
I'm about to make saying "build a community not an audience" a blockable offense. Some people need an audience to keep a roof over their head and food on the table, and it's the only option for many marginalized people who aren't able to be gainfully employed in society due to bigotry or lack of support. What do you want them to do, just starve because a fascist burned down their only means of generating income?
And why the hell are you letting brands own the word "audience" anyway, and pretending it's some dirty thing now? The arts have used that word respectfully for centuries, long before brands came around
I'm sorry I keep posting about this but as a working slash often starving artist the mastodon interaction purity police is really starting to get to me
So let me be very clear; this is just Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Artists who come here fearing imminent homelessness are going to be preoccupied with gaining enough eyeballs to make that not happen. Building a community is a tier above that in the hierarchy of needs and is not something people are gonna be shooting for if they might starve within the next few weeks. Once they're stable, almost all of them will move on to building a community because community and audience aren't even mutually exclusive. And scolding people who are frantic about basic survival about their lack of noble goals for using this platform isn't helping
Like, my god. A whole class of creative people are biting their nails fearing for their literal lives because a fascist just burned down the only means of generating income they have and in some cases the only means of generating income that /society will afford them/ and they're coming here exhausted and terrified and instead of warmly welcoming them in you're going tut tut and telling them they're doing survival wrong. Just. FUCK
Sorry for posting about this a lot but this is a hill I am absolutely willing to die on. Nobody should be forced to choose between staying on a site full of nazis and being shamed for sharing the cool shit they made, even if the sharing is intended to make money. Everyone deserves to eat
And if you only wanna have stimulating discussions and not be marketed towards then I invite you to use one of the many tools such as disabling boosts, unfollowing, muting, or blocking which are at your disposal in order to craft the experience you want on the fediverse. Just not pressuring other people into doing things your way
Hey artists/devs/authors/other creatives! Self promote all you want (so long as your instance allows it I guess) and if anyone comes into your mentions talking about how "oh we don't do that here, we value *dialogue* over *advertising*" just ignore em! Most of us want to see the cool stuff you made because making stuff and sharing it is a valuable part of community building too
People need to realize that "I need to sell my product" and "I want people to discover this creative work I made and am proud of" are one and the same for anyone who creates for a living
Creatives needing to stay clothed, sheltered, and fed isn't some personal slight against you and way too many people here act like it is
