@eff @aaronmackey @marketplaceapm usually anything with "protect children" has the same vibes as "family values", but I'm not sure what the law is actually requiring that would be a free speech issue. "Don't track minors" and "Don't design things to psychologically trap minors" don't seem objectionable.

@arstechnica i really wish you'd follow up headlines like this with something like "here's how you build your own".

I don't actually know what your reader base is actually like, but I'd bet a significant amount of them have the ability to slot together a couple rasberry pi/Arduino modules to make a digital wiress photo frame, or even a full assistant replacement that's doesn't rely on these companies that constantly screw over their customers.

At this point, I feel like all of big corporate tech is just manufactured demand. Very little of it solves real issues, and when it does it makes it so inconvenient and trashy it's basically no easier than not having it. In many cases the widespread adoption of new tech is either neutral or net negative for average quality of life.

@aral What exactly do you precive the danger to be?

I don't like threads, but it's mere existence and inclusion doesn't seem to be dangerous. Right now it seems more like a benign tumor. Something to watch.

@nixCraft no. Every time I've used it it gave me bs answers even to trivial questions. I don't need to generate "Harry potter, but it's under water" that often.
