I don't really get how people still buy Amazon products.

@arstechnica In case anyone wants a digital display that you actually own and will show whatever you want, check out Dakboard. We've had one for years and love it, no affiliation. There's a free version with zero ads and it'll pull from whatever cloud storage you want (Dropbox, etc.)

@arstechnica i really wish you'd follow up headlines like this with something like "here's how you build your own".
I don't actually know what your reader base is actually like, but I'd bet a significant amount of them have the ability to slot together a couple rasberry pi/Arduino modules to make a digital wiress photo frame, or even a full assistant replacement that's doesn't rely on these companies that constantly screw over their customers.
