That's cool.
There are few things that are food in my environment that will grow as perennials.
I've had and been adding to the number of raised beds year by year. I'll probably brick them up into something very permanent in a few more years.
Groundhogs and deer are frequent here. Raised beds help. Concentric layers of various types of fencing also help.
A lot of these critters don't like sharing space with chickens. The chickens are willing to make a ruckus and to be assiduously territorial, and it makes my life easier. I should probably just get a dog but I'd prefer to get a puppy, and I just can't justify the cost right now. To be honest, out of the animals I have, I really like chickens. The birds are a special trifecta of militaristic, patristic, and socialistic. When the other animals are a headache, it's nice knowing how well the birds take care of themselves with a minimum of my own intervention.
