Grrrr 🤬 sons of bitches!!!! Been growing this broccoli since February. Finally get a floret and these dirty rotten expletives freaking ruin it overnight.
@TinyHouse4Life@HebrideanHecate I had a cabbage that was just starting to form it's head and found several little fuckers snacking and shitting everything up in there.
@TinyHouse4Life@HebrideanHecate that's how I feel with my strawberries every damn time I go out and another beautiful berry has been tested by the local fauna
@TinyHouse4Life@thatguyoverthere Friend gave me 12 cosmos plants last year and next door’s hens destroyed all but 4 of them, we have deer here too, so you can imagine, but veg loss is even more infuriating.
@HebrideanHecate@thatguyoverthere That's stinks! We built fencing around everything this year to keep the hens out. Hopefully the 4 that were left will seed out for you and next year more cosmos will appear
Use Bt. It kills caterpillars. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Mix in a pump sprayer. It’s impossible to grow brassicas in my region without taking care of caterpillars.
I hate growing brassicas, plus they taste just "meh". Low yield per square foot. I just don't see the point, but we gotta try every year because somebody either loves them or loves disappointment, gets a little of both
I really enjoy mustard greens during the summer for sandwiches and stuff, but they take up a lot less room and I can grow them pretty much anywhere. I grow kale too, but usually it ends up going to the animals. I love broccoli myself, but I have never had much luck growing it.
We're usually eating cabbage moth leftovers, if that. Hypothyroid experiences like me shouldn't be eating any brassicas anyhow. Anything to keep the keeper happy though.
@kekkerel@HaleakalaCrater@TinyHouse4Life@iDoobyLeaves@HebrideanHecate I have only given annuals partial attention. I try to spend more effort on food producing perennials tbh. I always do a little bit of annual stuff, but normally it's not particularly successful. This year there are a lot of things looking really good. The potatoes and sweet potatoes are looking really good, and some of my tomatoes are getting as tall as I am with a bunch of fruits on them. I have some funny looking cucumbers forming and even saw a little eggplant starting to form the other day. Hopefully the melon and pumpkin vines will pick up the pace here soon.
@kekkerel@HaleakalaCrater@TinyHouse4Life@iDoobyLeaves@HebrideanHecate yeah rabbit poo is great stuff. My main issue has been that most of my soil is very hard clay, and I was resistant to raised beds. I am always working to try and improve the soil, but a couple years ago I built 2 raised beds and since last year I've started using straw bales (mostly composted) to plant some extra stuff. I will continue planting and layering on the troubled areas to improve them over time, but I am taking annuals a little more seriously this year and actually trying to get a decent yield.
It's been the first year for me using rabbit manure. I can report noticeable improvements in performance so far. It's just been so wet that I've had to be careful about mold.
@kekkerel@HaleakalaCrater@TinyHouse4Life@iDoobyLeaves@HebrideanHecate I don't have deer to deal with, but groundhogs, skunks, possums, and raccoons have been known to take up residence. I have poultry too, and I've had a dog out there with them for a few years at this point after losing 4 turkey poults to a cat one spring. Since then the only time any predators have had success was when we had her indoors.
I have planted a bunch of berry bushes and fruit trees over the years. This year I've been working on cloning some of the things I've planted. I have as many potted raspberries today as I did when I bought my first batch which is a great feeling, and I have a blackberry or 2 and a boysenberry I am planning to pot up this weekend.
I planted a paw paw tree about 4 or 5 years ago, but at the time I thought they were self pollinating. They aren't sadly, but I am going to go paw paw hunting in Paw Paw, WV this year and try and get some seeds to start some new trees here.
There are few things that are food in my environment that will grow as perennials.
I've had and been adding to the number of raised beds year by year. I'll probably brick them up into something very permanent in a few more years.
Groundhogs and deer are frequent here. Raised beds help. Concentric layers of various types of fencing also help.
A lot of these critters don't like sharing space with chickens. The chickens are willing to make a ruckus and to be assiduously territorial, and it makes my life easier. I should probably just get a dog but I'd prefer to get a puppy, and I just can't justify the cost right now. To be honest, out of the animals I have, I really like chickens. The birds are a special trifecta of militaristic, patristic, and socialistic. When the other animals are a headache, it's nice knowing how well the birds take care of themselves with a minimum of my own intervention.
