@synapsid @PraxisOfEvil A fren showed me a list of the guys holding up the comms infrastructure in the state…..it’s very bleak. Newest hire is in ‘02, all the guys trained on these systems are retired in the next 3 years, if they haven’t been forced out already. The company seems to be comfy with the idea that older systems and land connections will be terminated in favor of “wireless”, and that goes for high-uptime phone systems too.
Seems like a tiny deal but these are the guys who get paged out at 1 AM to go and make sure the 911 facility can still receive phone calls. If they all retire at once, the state’s basically stuck replacing the system entirely, or accepting that 99.98% uptime is something we’ll leave back in the good ol’ days
