It uses some kind of falloff system, so one click on the upvote button isn't equal to one upvote, and this gets more extreme after certain thresholds. So when you see some gay post about [current event] on the front page and it has 237K upvotes, that's not real - it's been done by the staff. This is what someone told me a while ago, at least.
