     There was also a frankish smith called Ulfberht who stamped his name on his swords. They were so highly prized other smiths started copying them so there's a whole category of "Ulfberht swords" that have been found.

     @Eiregoat @dharmadudebro @theudoriks I feel like this is a common pattern, like there are tons of “fake” colts with prancing ponies made in belgium and spain because people thought the Colt logo looked cool

     Can’t find one but here’s an unnamed, anon craftsman in Liege who just decided to make an S&W ripoff, even stamped a fake patent on the rib

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @Eiregoat @dharmadudebro @theudoriks I seem to remember it being common after colt let some Belgians manufacture under license, but then it all kinda slipped out during the 1850's.
     
     I didn't realize they did it with cartridge pistols but I'm not really surprised, unless it was from uh, certain more restrictive european countries.
