   @victor @EssentialUtinsil I would rather people strap in for the long haul. Propagating this doomed mentality and telling people it’s all gonna be over ends up wasting a lot of life-years because people end up planning for a future that never comes.

   “haha, who cares about retirement? I’ll never live to 60” is fun and glib, but chances are most here WILL. And I’d rather them prepare for THAT eventuality over the full collapse. You can do both, but IRL should take up the bulk of our attention. I’d rather someone have, say, $10,000 in acquiring a technical, useful, lasting skill instead of $10k in survival shit. The canned food will deteriorate, but the ability to repair stuff won’t.

     It’s a shame, we met when I sat behind her in class and the first thought that came to me, sitting there staring at her long blonde hair, was “haha wouldn’t it be wild if we ended up getting married?”

     When we started dating she said there was something similar, on her end, too.

     Yeah, at the time I had doubts about how suitable she was. As I am now I’d have no problem taking care of her. Back then, about 80% chance of managing her perfectly?

     It’s just a shame to throw that away, very cute story between us that would have been great to maintain

     Now imagine your not even in first grade and everyone is telling you that “Waco was just the start kid, I don’t think your’e gonna get to graduate from high school, this whole tinderbox of a country will be up in flames by then!”

     Then once that wears off the patriot act and 9/11 paranoia sets in while those same guys see the security apparatus tightening. “Shit kid, this is really bad, you’re gonna be drafted before you get a diploma for sure!

     Then Obama coming in and taking all the guns w/ door to door confiscations.

     Then Antifa riots, government overreactions, etc.

     I’m burned out on it, and I don’t want guys living live where PLAN A is “who cares man, live for today for tomorrow we shall surely die!“ Because things can remain retarded longer than any of us may live.

     I’d rather we teach boys to be Welders, counselors, doctors and sailors who can survive, instead of self-taught Army Rangers with nothing but an empty resume

     Hell, a solid chunk of the reason I was so ready to uproot myself and head abroad at such a young age was because I thought I needed to cut my teeth and go through some shit in order to survive in the collapse to come. Had I stayed behind I would have married my HS sweetheart and we’d have a litter of kids by now. She really, really loved me, and I basically abandoned her to go “be a man”, thinking “if we work out we work out, man, if it’s meant to be….” instead of taking accountability and recognizing I was throwing away an irreplaceable woman.

     it was a choice I made, yeah, but who knows how it would have been weighed out in my head if I hadn’t thought I’d need that experience in order to make it anywhere in life. So I’d like for the kids to just make “Collapsitarian warband member” like number five, or maybe 9 in their order of career options, behind more sensible, real world stuff like medevac nurse or electrical engineer. Jobs like that still equip you for the end of the world anyways, but allow you to actually live until the power goes out for good.

     You and I think a lot alike. I've told people to learn to be an EMT, weld, etc. because those are "prepping" skills that you can make a living off of now and also use the skills if or when "shtf" happens.
     
     Also, I am in the same position as far as choices I've made in the past with women and careers. It's human nature I think to look back and wonder what might have been but it doesn't do us a whole lot of good at the end of the day aside from learning from past mistakes. I like to think that everything happens for a reason.

     That thinking has hurt so many people. You need to kinda make plans for both happening.
     
     One of the few things I've been wrong about politics wise in the last 6 years or so is how quickly things got shitty and yet we still aren't in the middle of a civil war. It has to get a lot worse for the average person before we get any meaningful change.
     
     Come to think of it, that mindset actually hurt me a little bit. I kept putting off going back to college to become a lawyer because I just knew obama would piss people off enough to do something and I didn't want to be in the middle of getting a degree that I wouldn't be able to finish when I could be using the time and money to "prep." After two years of that I realized that I'd be able to finish my pre law degree and probably finish law school by the time anything crazy enough to cause BIG changes would happen.

     @birdulon @victor @GabeLakmann @EssentialUtinsil I say engineers because they have a better basis for repairing complex, tiny machinery. Electricians are real-world applicable, but when the local CNC mill can’t import machinery from germany, I don’t think the average electrician is up to the task of analyzing and retro engineering the boards to bring it back to life.

     It all depends on what you do with the degree. The usual roster of jobs isn’t all that impressive, but i’ve seen a few of them become the “I know a guy….” for any difficult, expensive problem in that purview

     It's a nice skillset but anyone intending to actually earn money pre-collapse should pick electrician instead. The accessible job market for EEs without solid connections is pretty poor, despite industry propaganda. Maybe that will change over the years when more boomers leave but not a day goes by that I don't regret toughing it out instead of switching to CS a decade ago.

     @EssentialUtinsil @victor @GabeLakmann @WashedOutGundamPilot I thought I was doing the 'work your way up' thing for the past 6 years, but then a 7 month job hunt reminded me that the uni pamphlet's expected starting salary is still out of reach.
     
     Made the mistake of being in a "skills shortage" cohort where "industry" was pushing for high course uptake. Of course, they filled that gap by other means before I graduated, and it took me half a year to even find anyone that would let me work for free to complete the internship requirements of my degree (90min driving commute for that too, fun times). I wish I was even half as cynical back when I was picking a degree as I am now.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @birdulon @victor @GabeLakmann electrical engineering is a broad field, there are plenty of engineers that would have a hard time doing that because it's not what they specialize in.
     
     like a lot of things, you need a job to get experience, and you need experience to get a job. I had this problem getting out of college right in the middle of an economic downturn when places were eliminating all their entry-level engineer positions. I ended up just taking a job as a wiring technician and doing the boomer 'work your way up' thing.

     Mechanical engineers do pretty well, electrical engineers do too, at least in my area (southeast). As far as something like that being useful during a collapse, you might be surprised.
     
     An electrical engineer would come in handy when it came to fixing broken equipment at a hospital that is coming back online to figuring out how to make a small electrical grid work. It wouldn't immediately be useful but you can bet that after a few months of no electricity and people dying because they couldn't find working healthcare equipment, an electrical engineer would be highly valued. People want comfort and their electronics and those who have grown up with them aren't going to forget about them over a year or five.

     @GabeLakmann @birdulon @victor @EssentialUtinsil I have an odd view of the world, I guess, because I’ve tended towards mobile, weird work that puts me in contact with a bizarre class of people. For years I’ve seen the “oh, I know a guy who’s real good with that, lemme give ya his number” specialists that come in out of nowhere and solve the problem, and that’s not really something you find on the job boards, so much as you fall into by circumstance and skill

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @victor @GabeLakmann @EssentialUtinsil How you've described the flight industry in some other posts sounds similar, the glamor jobs are mostly held by fossils and there's been a lack of opportunities for new entrants. Meanwhile trades have stayed pretty reliable, at least in Aus. Most of my younger electrician friends and acquaintances are homeowners already while I'm thinking the collapse (or some hypothetical total boomer death event that I do not endorse) might be my only chance in life at this rate.
