@ForbiddenDreamer @TimeSpent @AnimeTradCath @Barbecued_Lemons @Dudebro this is now the second time of the day I'm oddly recalling an ex's adoration for that new zealand comedy band
I think they did a song called "leggy bitch"

@ForbiddenDreamer @TimeSpent @AnimeTradCath @Barbecued_Lemons @Dudebro Yeah that's it! It hit me hard this morning, someone sent me a clip and it reminded me of having that never-ending relationship w/ millie girls who want you to sit there in time out and watch every second of their pet show
and you aren't allowed to stop until you laugh hard enough at all her favorite parts. I remember her importing the DVDs for it because she didn't know how to torrent. Her family would burst through the door and say "hands up!" at random times to make sure we weren't fooling around under her cozy blanket
It's crazy recalling this stuff, feels like it was un-deleted from my mental timeline until today
I actually kinda liked the robot skit of theirs though

@ForbiddenDreamer @TimeSpent @AnimeTradCath @Barbecued_Lemons @Dudebro I just can't like this show that much, reminds me of that dead-end vibe of napoleon dynamite. It's not so loving towards its subject, it portrays this modest, content life of middling existance with a hollywoodish contempt, always rubbed me the wrong way

@WashedOutGundamPilot @ForbiddenDreamer @TimeSpent @AnimeTradCath @Barbecued_Lemons @Dudebro I liked napoleon dynamite and the vibe it had. I like it more now than back when I first watched it and didn’t really understand the charm and appeal of a quiet modest existence

@Turdicus @ForbiddenDreamer @TimeSpent @AnimeTradCath @Barbecued_Lemons @Dudebro It's not as bad, you kind of get the sense those people didn't truly HATE their people like the conchords one did. It's fun talking about the fact that napoleon and king of the hill portray a borderline utopia to us today

@WashedOutGundamPilot @ForbiddenDreamer @TimeSpent @AnimeTradCath @Barbecued_Lemons @Dudebro yeah I think napoleon was intended to make awkwardness and mudane space funny but I would say it managed to be charming about it. i think it’s easy to try and find the anti whiteness (im just going to assume that hating your people means this) in media but I think this was just making everyone a strange dork and the cast just happened to be mostly white, because that was who the movie was for. even uncle Rico at the end gets a girl to show up to his trailer. that didnt need to be in the movie, it didn’t add anything. I can’t really see the movie as hating the people the movie is for with that included. even if I am giving too much of a benefit of the doubt to the creators

@Turdicus @ForbiddenDreamer @TimeSpent @AnimeTradCath @Barbecued_Lemons @Dudebro Kind of, but even smaller scale than that. Napoleon dynamite is that thing that tries to show off small town western america, the kind of outliers that dot the landscape in the midwest. That's what people like about it, it happens to capture a lot of that "small town straddling a 2-lane" sentiment, in that it's just displaced from the national culture stream, stagnant, and humble.
There's something about it that always struck me as it being made by people from that kind of community, and trying to joke around about what it's like living in what they consider a dead-end, poverty-adjacent, small world. If you've lived in those places then so much of the movie rings true in the dressing, the experiences, and the sentiments, but at the end of the day I can't shake the feeling that the people who made it feel like gods watching the critters inside their ant farm:
As if one producer was looking down at the finished product, thinking "Ah, look at these quaint, small souls living in this dead-end town."
He moved away "for college" and has never gone back, because he doesn't like the way home feels to him.
