another 50+ freedom degree day in february
this is the least wintry winter I've ever seen north of the mason dixon
-
@deprecated_ii and then it'll dip meaning I still can't plant stuff yet 💀
-
@johnbudd1350 @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 yeah it's nice. knew one but we kinda drifted apart over the years. he made me a fence post driver back in the day that I still have, the thing weighs like 50lbs and I could use it as a battering ram if I needed lol.
-
@johnbudd1350 @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 I learned years ago to not cheap out on tools. If you can weld, you could probably just make one, it's just heavy steel tines welded to the tubing with a little reinforcement
-
@EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 Man I need to make friends with welders
-
@EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 I guess I'm lucky to have what seems to be naturally well draining soil. Although I guess I'll find out this year if it still works well haha
Thanks for the recommendation I might actually get it
-
@EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 Holy shit that's expensive :02_haha:
-
@johnbudd1350 @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 I use a broadfork to loosen everything, but wasn't quite thawed enough. had some other projects to work on so it was ok, but man I'm itching to get started.
-
@EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 I know it feels so good. I don't have a broad fork but I'd love to get one.
-
@johnbudd1350 @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 Meadow Creature is what I use if you're looking to get one. They are solid tools, got almost 7 years on mine now. My land is clay and everything will drown if it doesn't get good drainage. Normal tiller will just hardpan it, so the broadfork is the perfect tool.
-
@EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 Ground was actually soft enough to work this weekend, I did a lot of digging. Still have to form more beds and paths though
-
@PhenomX6 I don't plan to put anything in the ground until ~may 15, but I'm farther north than you
I'm going to start seedlings indoors in a week or two
-
@deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 it's always tough this time of year when it's warm. I at least wish the ground would thaw so I could start some prep work.
-
@johnbudd1350 @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 soil health and ecology is basically ignored in the age of chemical fertilizers, because it's 'inefficient'.
-
@EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii @johnbudd1350 I bought a tiller really cheap from the local returned retail shit auction. It's a shit tier corded one probably I'm gonna get a gas one if I move to bigger property.
-
@johnbudd1350 @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 I'm a fan, it's quite a bit of work but I do 2 passes with it on all my rows then run over with a drill-powered tilther that smooths out the very top layer without inverting the subsoil.
-
@EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii @PhenomX6 I've been reading some stuff that suggests tilling every year isn't necessary since it disturbs the soil's ecosystem. Might try it because I am also lazy lol
-
@johnbudd1350 @EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii I'm only tilling here because the soil is clay as shit and plant roots last year didn't grow right or get into the soil.
-
@deprecated_ii I started my tomatoes too early and now have to repot them. The bell peppers and the rest I started at a good time imo
-
@PhenomX6 @johnbudd1350 @deprecated_ii just tilling might not help, you'll want to be adding stuff like compost and avoid compacting it. clay isn't all bad, it has lots of nutrients and holds moisture, but if you break it all up without changing the structure it'll just turn into rocks in the heat of summer if you don't have irrigation.
