I have a 9-5 WFH thing, but I have to take on 6 other clients to make the ends meet, so I end up working all the time. I try to "cheat" my time with my company and get client work during the 9-5 hours, so I can be present in the evenings and weekends, but it's still hard. Especially when Slack and emails never end.
Keep it up, man. Be encouraged. If they're excited to see you, you're doing the right things. And when they're older, they'll understand. My 12yo has actually sat and prayed with my wife and I for my sanity as I work hard and try my best. She's even given me encouragement, because she sees how hard I push myself for everyone.
Don't lose hope. You're not alone.-

Boys are smart, (if you're smart) and they can understand you have constraints. But always keep that line open, let him know the things of the heart are always there to hash out w/ the old man.
Many dads don't get how important those late night hangouts are, when mom isn't eavesdropping over the shoulder and you're just sitting in the shop farting around with some hobby project together. That's when you let him know your life track, tell him your regrets, triumphs, motivations, happinesses, goals - that's how you let him know who you are as something other than the economic boat motor for the family, the disciplinarian, the manager. That's how he gets to know his father.
I'm always appalled at how many sons don't really know their dad. They don't know who his exes were, why they weren't picked to be their mother, have no idea what his lowest moments were.
But as with all things in parenting, just caring to begin with means you're doing better than most
