Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2023 00:25:19 JST Moon additional horrible realization: i'll look at somebody kind of old and call them a boomer but they're probably around the same age as me so when i call someone like them a bunch of morons as a class i am talking about the class of people that i myself am in -
Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks (washedoutgundampilot@poa.st)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2023 00:25:18 JST Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks @Moon I refer to them as boomers (spiritual). There are enough pockets of wealth and comfort that plenty of GenX grew up with the same boomerist mentality their predecessors did.
Boomerism is an outlook, a way of seeing reality as if it’s always a sunny day in 1965

Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2023 00:32:57 JST Moon @WashedOutGundamPilot I am barely old enough that things weren't so bad when I got my foot in the door of the employment market. Things were recognizably getting bad but I squeaked in. So I benefit but I definitely see how everybody younger than me got fucked. I'm glad at least I am aware that just because I am doing well everyone is not doing well. Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks likes this. -

Every line is diff, some you can walk right on, others have been ruined with years of bureaucracy for even entry-level jobs. Our industry is in constant panic mode because they changed regs in 2009 and now only a fraction of candidates can build the experience needed.

Pete Zaitcev (zaitcev@shitposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2023 00:42:42 JST Pete Zaitcev @Moon @WashedOutGundamPilot My daughter had no trouble finding a job after her graduation from college in 2013. However, she majored in management, so had to live on a minimum wage while renting a corner in Daly City, California. She upgraded to having savings in a couple of years, but lived in a rented room until she moved to Texas in 2022. Only then she was able to rent a whole apartment. -

They’ll utterly ignore luck, or coincidence, timing or generosity in how they got ahead.
I used to know one guy who dropped out of high school in the 90’s, and ended up hired by his uncle working construction. Over time, he was the most sober one in the unit, and 20 years later they’d successfully ridden the property boom to sell off that same business for millions of dollars after seeing the rural area transform into a metro hellscape. When you tell him he really lucked out he’ll lecture you about how anyone could do it if you just worked as “hard as me”, and fully believes he inherited the uncle’s empire because he was the “best man for the job”
In reality, he’s not all that hard working and there was no one better to take the reigns in the family

Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2023 00:44:44 JST Moon @WashedOutGundamPilot Thank God I am not that guy either. I am probably the luckiest person on this network, I fell into material comfort by multiple times making choices about what to focus on in life that weren't based on wisdom or canny market analysis, stuff i was interested in happened to be lucrative. I wasn't trapped in my shitty hometown by settling down like almost everyone in my graduating class because I was an unfuckable nerd lol. not my choice. Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks likes this. -

The problem is that boomers tell you to use it on the wrong targets - the handshake, “go in that office and don’t leave until you have a job!” stuff only works if you’re angling for a company that has management inclined to appreciate it, and the latitude to hire you with it.
It doesn’t work for companies where hiring goes through the corporate website with little involvement from local management. The boomer spirit is looking outside and thinking 90% of jobs on the market are just like the good ol’ days - small locally owned businesses where everything is in-state

Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2023 00:56:25 JST Moon @zaitcev @WashedOutGundamPilot for the record i got my last (not current) job by walking into their headquarters and asking for a job. I'm not going to draw conclusions for an entire generation based on it but yeah it can still happen. -
Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks (washedoutgundampilot@poa.st)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2023 00:56:25 JST Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks @Moon @zaitcev We used to hire people at trade shows if they were looking for work. Now, with one of the old guy’s asian trophy wives running the show they’re doing nothing but hiring girls in their 20’s who end up doing 1/4 of the work they need to do and either ghosting us or saying they need “personal time” for something like covid or “anxiety”
Every time we’ve gone to replace them I ask to pick out from the resumes and they say “oh no, we already got one. She’s GREAT”. So far, the best has been….B-. The old guys are B+ to A-, but they aren’t good about time management, so they waste a lot of company time on low-yield clients that don’t merit that level of fit n’ finish.
I think at last count we had 6 or 7 girls in the last year that went through the start/disappear cycle. Only got 4 men in the other depts that I work with, too.
