Didn't though it made that much of a difference. The only downside is that the thing is pretty noisy compared to the others. -

The only kind I buy, worth the money, and they last longer, too. -

Oh yeah, they get loud.Good vibration isolating mounts and heavy airflow are a must.
SAS drives can do double the throughput of anything SATA and you can get SAS RAID cards stupid cheap, but the boot times are ridiculous.
I moved my SAS drives to a second box because of that.

Mostly because its the *only* fucking case on the market for microATX boards. Every NAS case is either full ATX or mini ITX these days for some retarded reason.
I have 4 drives now. The plan is to replace the three old shitty ones with 10 TB Exos drives one by one when i have dosh to spare.
Once i'll need more i'll grab an LSI SAS2008 HBI card. Until than the 4 SATA ports on the mobo will have to do.
Being able to mix drives is pretty much the reason i went with Unraid instead of TrueNAS. -

I don't understand why people still fall for the Ironwolf/WD Red "NAS drive" scam when you can get enterprise grade drives with double the MTTF for almost half the price. -

If you're looking at 10 TB drives, go for the helium drives. It'll be quieter and you can get them cheap.

Need is a strong word.I just love doing it, it's like my… nerd intellectual fetish… thing.
I've always loved making massive drive arrays and filling them with… I mean, you know what I'm filling them with.

I wish I had the money to burn so I could get those juicy—twenty-four… yeah, that's the largest right now—twenty-four terabyte SAS drives.Ooh yeah, a couple dozen of those… and yeah, it's RAID 6 or ZFS with dual parity or you might as well run striped.
Hell, anything important I honestly just suggest putting into a single NVMe with incremental backups and the good ol' 3-2-1 tiered backup solution.
