Like all they would've had to do is churn out average quality content with the poz slightly turned down, and they'd be making bank. They couldn't even pull that off.
The really dumb part: It was already written. It was literally right there for them to use. All they had to do was put it on film. They couldn't just take the free fucking money.
@Goalkeeper@sapphire And the reason they spent $4 billion to acquire the Star Wars IP was to make an assload of money, in addition to using it as a propaganda organ.
When no one sees your product, it defeats the purpose of getting the IP - not only are you hemorrhaging cash, but no one is seeing the poz you want to push. Total lose-lose situation.
@sapphire@Goalkeeper I honestly doubt they've made money on SW. In addition to the $4 billion just to get the IP, they've also had massive problems with budget overruns caused by major reshoots. The production budget for The Rise of Skywallker alone was rumored to run over $500 million.
That's why some of their planned output (such as the Kenobi series) had to be downgraded from movies to tv shows, the money just wasn't there. Likewise there's been a ton of stuff that was cancelled (the Han Solo trilogy, Rian Jonhson's trilogy, etc.). Not to mention the toy merchandise has been collecting dust on shelves for years.
@DW2@Goalkeeper They made their money back (while still getting to report losses year over year for tax breaks) and they took yet another one of your hobbies, forced you out of yet another thing you enjoyed.
@DW2@Goalkeeper none of it's real anyway and Disney owns a shitload of real estate investment trusts so even if they go "bankrupt" they own like half a US state worth of land
@Goalkeeper@DW2 In hindsight those Zahn novels doomed the new movies even further as a fair portion of Star Wars fans had read the novels and were inevitably going to compare their (failed) efforts with those of Zahn.
@sapphire@Goalkeeper Sure, but aside from making money the main reason to own Disney is to push narratives in media. Having no one watch SW content (also now Marvel) defeats the point.
Obviously BlackRock will never divest from Disney, its still way too valuable an asset. But the smart thing to do would be to moderate all the messaging, which being one of the largest shareholders they could definitively make happen.
@DW2@Goalkeeper What do they care? Owner of the land prior to the sale has no bearing on the value of the land after the sale, and you can do some kikery to sell it to yourself and get massive tax breaks so even if for some reason Blackrock didn't want more land (they do) there are options to leverage that real estate
I'll take your word on Dune (haven't seen the new one). All I know was, they had a good starting trilogy with Zahn and blew it. I think they are belatedly trying to pull Thrawn in now, but the damage is done.
@sapphire@Goalkeeper What a lot of people are doing now is watching/reading foreign stuff. If you go to any bookstore, the amount of manga that's available dwarfs American comics. Anime is very popular, and Korean content is now trendy.
